FEBRUARY 2021 : ISSUE 142

O

n Tuesday, 12 January, one of our members Hugh Elliot gave an

interesting and insightful talk on health and social care in te gr a tio n f r om a n accountants perspective. Having been involved in the integration Hugh was able to inform us of the vast cost of bed blocking against the costs of community and home care. He also discussed some of the complexities of bringing two of the largest authorities together, how it is managed, and the changing needs and costs of the health and social care as they move forward together. The talk was well received by the members and a vote of thanks was

given by Irene Walker who echoed the members’ view of this being an appropriate talk in regards to what is happening at the moment.

D

avid A Thornton began thinking up rhyming poems and short stories to keep his little sister quiet on long car journeys over 45 years ago. In 2018 he started to publish his poems on social media and now has

thousands of followers. In the last year over 2 million people have read his poems online. This one is very appropriate for our present situation.

Never again must we take it for granted; Our freedom to go where we please. To walk down a street, Hug our friends when we meet, Without fear of contracting disease.

Never again should we skip a friend’s party, Or make an excuse to stay at home, For those smiles and that laughter, Are now so sought after, As life now seems dull monochrome.

Wi l l we ev er agai n hear our grandchildren’s laughter? Their eyes lit up bright with delight, When they come round for tea, And they sit on your knee, Playing I Spy or Scrabble all night.

Or that thrill in the moment, the packed concert hall When the band on the stage starts to play, The feel in the crowd, As we all sing out loud, Will we ever return to that way?

Yes we will, yes we will, For our smiles will return There’s hope in the future, my friend, So start making plans, Whilst you’ve time on your hands, For patience will win in the end.
