FEBRUARY 2021 : ISSUE 142

Iain’s passion for opera showed in his lecture on the legendary Carl Rosa who seemed to follow Burns’ path on his travels around Scotland. Isobel Clifford, too, gave an excellent and detailed presentation on where we are with the club’s Public Image. There will be further discussion at the club’s forthcoming council and business meetings. Also in February we will have a variety of speakers. Gordon Moir (Feb 2nd) will give us some greenkeeping tales in his “Life before St Andrews”, and we also hear from guests Andy White (9th) on

the children’s hospice CHAS and David Stutchfield (23rd) who will tell us about the university’s biomass heating system and the project of laying pipes between Guardbridge and St Andrews. Wouldn’t it be great if we could extend the system to our homes? The club continues with its help to the local foodbank. Mike Dow, Grant Cargill and Jim Douglas have for a number of weeks been helping with transporting food supplies and there are a number of opportunities on the horizon where we might be able to of fer fur ther assistance. Wilda, too, has been busy each month buying most-needed grocery items for the charity. Much of the very generous £7000 donation from the R&A to our charity fund has now been disbursed and letters of thanks have been received from the various beneficiaries. The current lockdown continues so I’m e n j o y i n g r e v i s i t i n g , a n d c a n recommend, some of the lovely local walks including around Craigtoun and the Duke’s golf course, Spinkie and Lumbo Dens and round the back of Strathtyrum Estate heading from beside David Russell Halls towards the Balgove Larder. Stay safe.

Jim Allison
