Business News Mental Health First Aid

For any business employing staff, first aid is an essential requirement in all workplaces ensuring that any person taken ill or injured in the work place receives immediate and appropriate attention.

As important, and particularly in the current climate, is Mental Health First Aid. Employers have a duty of care towards their employees which includes their wellbeing.

While mental health issues have been brought to the fore by the media, there is still a significant amount of reticence or lack of knowledge around mental health, particularly in the workplace. According to the HSE one in four people in the UK will have a mental health problem at some point. Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health problems, often a reaction to a difficult life event, such as bereavement. Mental health issues can also be caused by or exacerbated by work-related issues.

Many workplaces have had to make and continue to make rapid changes to how they operate, including how and

where jobs are carried out, as well as planning for staff returning to work safely. Employees have also had to navigate the new ways of working, as well as adapt to changing personal circumstances. The uncertainties that exist as a result of the ongoing pandemic are continuing to play havoc in the workplace.

Investing in Mental Health First Aid Training will increase an employers undertanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing. It will provide the practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues giving the Mental Health First Aider the confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress more effectively.

Investing in Mental Health First Aid Training will also show your employees your commitment towards their wellbeing and, with a good mental health plan in place, will ultimately improve the health and wellbeing of your business at the same time.
