Pip’s Plant of the Month: Hamamelis Arnold Promise (Witch Hazel)
A fantastic tree for winter colour, the Hamamelis Arnold Promise has unusual spidery flowers with twisted bright yellow petals. The flowers are highly fragrant, so plant where you can enjoy it.
Great as a multi-stemmed large shrub or sin- gle-stemmed small tree, it offers a fantastic focal point with evergreens planted behind or under-planted with Hellebores and snowdrops
Witch Hazel prefers well drained slightly acidic (ericaceous) soil. They thrive in sun or shade and prefer shel- ter from strong winds during theflowering season. The shrubs can grow to a height of 4m and a spread of 4m.
If you feel you have to prune, do it immediately after flowering and only prune out dead, diseased or crossing stems.
