Crowd-funding campaign achieves target to restore the gravestone and kerbstone of local hero Ben Warren.
Ben Warren, born in Newhall in May 1879, played junior football in Swadlincote and Newhall, before playing for local club, Newhall Town FC and Newhall Swifts FC before being signed by Derby County FC in May 1898 as an inside-left. He moved to right-half and became one of the best in the country.
After 242 league appearances and nineteen goals, Warren was signed to Chelsea FC in 1908 and played for England 22 times including the First Overseas tour in 1908 playing Austria (twice), Hungary and Bohemia. In 1911 Warren sustained a knee injury that was to end his football career. Sadly his health declined and he passed in 1917 at the young age of 37 years leaving behind wife Minnie and four children, Harry, Lillian, Maurice and Grenville.
Local Newhall resident, Colin Smith, found a family link to Benjamin Warren while researching his family tree. He located his grave and found it to be in poor condition with the main cross broken. Colin spent the last few months obtaining permission and quotes to replace the headstone and cross of our local hero. Facing the final hurdle, Colin had set up a crowdfunding campaign to raise the last £1200 to complete the fundraising efforts. Thanks to the generosity of Chelsea supporters, football supporters, local residents, friends and family the target of £1200 was achieved in just 3 days and Colin can now give Ben Warren the recognition he deserves. Thanks also to Pat Artstone from Artstone Memorials Stapenhill in helping to bring this campaign to fruition.

4 It’s time to get buzzing
Swad in Bloom’s Community Bee Hive Project is buzzily getting ready to launch its first beehiive to be located in the centre of Swadlincote.
With one in three mouthfuls of the food we eat dependant on pollination, bees are essential to our existence and with many species facing extinction, the reliance of bee keepers is now crucial.
SiB’s Community Beehive Project aims to educate and practise bee keeping, with the help of The Bee Farmer, to aid pollination in and around Swadlincote.
Our fundraising campaign to raise £500 for the first hive, bee colony and associated equipment is now open.
If you are interested in learning more about bees or getting involved in bee keeping or making a donation, please visit www.

Every donation will be greatly appreciated and will be rewarded with an invitation to a special event later in the year.
