Dept Health Salt Therapy

Improves Respiratory & Immune Function

By Andrea Geresdi

“Salt therapy helps with

strengthening the immune system and

improving lung

function to build an inhospitable terrain for

COVID-19.” - Andrea Geresdi

ry salt therapy, also known as Halotherapy, is very beneficial for overall wellness as it

removes toxicity from the respiratory system, im- proves the function and appearance of the skin, and boosts the immune system. In the 1800s, a Polish doctor noticed that salt mine workers had fewer respiratory concerns than other miners. A German doctor also noted respiratory health benefits in people spending time in salt caves. There is a possibility salt therapy may play a role in prevention or treatment of coronavirus. In 2014, the Salt Therapy Association was

formed by an international group of the most prominent industry experts, leaders, influencers and medical professionals, including Founding Director Dr. Daniel T. Layish, MD, a 20-year veteran pulmonologist and Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease. According to Dr. Layish, “It is too early to tell what impact halotherapy may have with this strain of the coronavirus, howev- er, this coronavirus does affect the respiratory and lung system and dry salt therapy has shown to provide symptomatic benefit such as in a clin- ical study we conducted that focused on patients with cystic fibrosis.” Dry salt therapy is antimi- crobial which kills some microorganisms or stops their growth. People are exposed to pollutants, airborne dis-

eases, bacteria, allergens and other irritating fac- tors on a daily basis. Halotherapy is a method to cleanse and detox the lungs as well as invigorate the entire body with increased lung capacity and oxygen intake and an improved immune system.

Research has found that inhaled dry salt particles have bactericide, mucokinetic, hydrophilic and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help to reduce inflammation in the entire respiratory tract and widen the airway passages. Dry salt particles are known to accelerate the transporta- tion of mucus. Dry salt is super absorbent and acts like a

sponge attracting foreign substances along its path through the respiratory tract. The dry salt can be imagined to behave like a toothbrush that cleans the respiratory system and removes build-up of foreign elements that cause various respiratory conditions. The following condi- tions are improved through dry salt therapy: asthma, allergies, common cold, bronchitis, COPD, cystic fibrosis, sinusitis, ear infections and smoker’s cough. Psychological and emotional benefits include

reduced stress, relaxation and rejuvenation. Research shows salt cave therapy normalizes certain levels in the brain, improving a per- son’s positive outlook and mood. Negative ions also help you sleep by regulating your serotonin secretion, reduce headaches and sickness and increase the flow of oxygen to the brain resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy.•
