PUBLISHER'SLETTER
all is here and the change of seasons is always bittersweet for me. I’m a summer girl for sure and I hate to see summer end, but now that I live in Naples during the winter I’ve started to enjoy all of the wonderful things autumn brings to Connecticut. I love the gorgeous foliage, pumpkin beer, a chance to wear cowboy boots and scarves, warm days and cool nights,
F
and of course my favorite holiday falls in October – Halloween! Change is inevitable – that’s for sure, no matter how much we may resist
it. But, change for many brings elements of fear. Sometimes it may feel as if things are being ripped away from us even if it’s something we’ve asked for or have outgrown. As creatures of habit, we feel more comfortable when things stay the same and when we know what to expect, but that doesn’t allow for growth. In order for us to evolve, we must accept that change is necessary and we must look at it as a benefi cial thing. We must learn to allow people and things to fl ow in and out of our lives without trying to hold on too tight. It’s holding on and resisting change that creates drama and causes us turmoil and pain. But the letting go part…that’s easier said than done, right?
One of my favorite quotes by Richard Bach is this, “If you love some- thing, set it free. If it comes back to you, it’s yours. If it doesn’t, it was never meant to be.” If you can fully step in to the belief that all you have is what is in this present moment and begin to stop worrying about the future or replay- ing the past, then you will accept change gracefully and easily. I can think of a number of experiences in my life when I held on and resisted the fl ow and every time it caused me pain. From the death of my father to a broken en- gagement to leaving a job I loved, each time I would dwell on the “why” and evoke a deluge of pain and heartache. Instead of focusing on trying to fi gure out why this happened to us, wouldn’t it be better to ask, “How can I learn or benefi t from this situation?” What doors are opening as a result of the loss?
There are some amazing and deeply personal articles in this issue
about how to accept change and loss. I feel they are so timely with all of the changes we’ve been dealing with over these last few months. Caroline Wetzel writes about how her health condition led her to her dream career. Sharon Sklar teaches us how she recovered from a breast cancer diagnosis and years of surgery and treatment. Our feature, written by Pat Heavren, is an incredible story about overcoming a life shattering accident. I’m so grateful to all of our writers for their willingness to share their personal stories. I hope you will fi nd wisdom and peace through these articles.
