Murder victim Andre is remembered by town

ON A windy evening as Storm Francis rolled in across the county town, a small gathering remem- bered the last moments of Andre Bent, who died here a year ago. Flowers and candles were left

near the spot were he was killed on August 25, 2019, by Vasilios Ofo- geli, who wielded the machete which seriously injured three oth- ers. Rev Canon Arthur Houston told those who tried to save Andre on the night that they had done their best “and it just wasn’t to be”. In a prayer, Rev Houston, of the Maidstone Street Pastors, said the occasion was a time to “let go of those feelings” and move on. The family of Londoner Andre sent a message to the organisers, thanking the people who tired to save his life and for holding the memorial service. Student Andre, who was in Maidstone to watch grime artist MoStack perform, died of a single stab wound to the chest.

Street pastor Nigel Downes said

he was pleased by the turnout, given the Covid-19 pandemic. Organiser Val Jacobs, trustee of

the of Urban Blue Bus safe haven in the town centre, said the memo- rial was a way to “celebrate as well as mourn” Andre’s life. Earlier this year, a jury heard Ofogeli had travelled to Maidstone from London with friends to watch the performance at the Gallery nightclub, which ended just before

3am on the morning in question. Violence erupted on the streets after MoStack performed on the August Bank Holiday weekend. In a rampage around Bank Street and Jubilee Square, the killer, who was just 16 at the time, produced a large machete-type knife. Ofogeli was jailed for 20 years in May this year. Nine other men, all of whom did not live in Maidstone, were also sent to prison for their part in the disturbance.
