Remote Subsea Inspection Technology Overcomes Challenges

CEO of MCS, Wael Bakr

Integrated technology and inspection company, MCS, has launched a new system which allows an entire offshore inspection campaign to be delivered remotely.

The Remote Inspection System (RIS) utilises sophisticated data compression and transfer as well as 3D imagery and data capture to move all work completed from an offshore vessel inspection container onshore.

The solution overcomes travel restrictions and ensures safety of people by allowing work to be completed anywhere, including at home, with live video feeds and clear voice communication.

Wael Bakr, Founder and CEO of MCS, said: “We constantly strive to solve challenges for our clients with slick and proven technology.

“The entire offshore industry is having to adapt very quickly to the current global situation, ensure the health and safety of teams while continuing operational excellence to meet

the world’s demand for energy.

“The RIS system is part of our evolution of technologies towards a transformational programme to fully support remote digitisation, automation and machine learning as well as the efficient data management, data gathering and evaluation of inspection asset integrity programmes.

“The RIS not only overcomes potential challenges caused by Covid-19, it saves money and allows inspection campaigns to be completed three times faster than using a traditional offshore team.

“As the operation can be completed entirely from onshore, the team is only working during hours of operation saving on mobilisation and demobilisation, transit and weather delays. It offers complete flexibility. Once the system has been set-up on a vessel, the RIS can be used instantly on request of the client, even at very short notice.

“The system has been used successfully by several OPCOs in

the Middle East, allowing our clients to maintain maximum efficiency during 24hour operations.

“We have delivered reporting from platform inspections just five days after inspection activities were complete, which is much faster than would be expected from a team offshore. We are proving that this system can work just as efficiently, if not more so, than a traditional offshore team.

“At MCS, innovation is in our DNA and we invest heavily in Research and Development (R&D) from our own innovation house. The result is state-of-the-art software and technology which works.

“The possibilities are endless and we can see the expansion of this system to encompass many other offshore activities including geophysical data processing, well logging, pipeline installation, topside production monitoring and many others. The technology is an excellent example of how innovation will help our industry overcome the challenges sent to try us.”
