MOTORING

Lucky number 7 for Audi’s mile-muncher

The Audi A7 Sportback here is somewhat of a forgotten soldier. What it brings to the party is a large, luxury car that has four doors, powerful engines and a hatchback rear end – the latter normally reserved for the shoppers of this world. Motoring journalist Nick Jones reveals his thoughts on the car after taking it out on the road

In my book, the fact it has a hatchback configuration only adds credence to the A7 – and could tempt saloon car lovers of this world back into the practicality cocoon sooner, rather than later, if a big car is your thing. Looks-wise, we have the goatee-beard grille at the

front, thin headlamps and a wide track. It’s so low at the front, in the rear-view mirror it

actually looks like the R8 coming up behind you with the powerful LEDs shining brightly. Down the sides, we have four huge doors and fluted

arches housing enormous alloy wheels. At the back, the hatch bit becomes more prominent as it tails off to a somewhat curvaceous and engaging rump that has a distinctive lip spoiler. At five metres long and nearly two metres wide, it

can only just be housed neatly in a car park with two parallel white lines on the floor. Engine-wise, you can have either petrol or diesel.

The line-up has two 3.0-litre TFSI engines – one with 245 brake horsepower, or a more powerful 340 version. Diesel-wise, a 2.0-litre TDI produces 204 horsepower

and again, you can have a powerful 286 horsepower version. Whichever you choose, you can have it in 2WD, although those wanting the surety of the Quattro system will have to pay for the privilege. These are the highlight engines, but in total you have

the choice of seven, including a new hybrid with eight trim levels. I’m sure there’s one to suit you and the budget. You have no reason to fault the interior – it’s

comfortable, swathed in leather and has all the trappings of a car costing much more that it actually does.

68 business network August/September 2020 Yes, it also seats four adults very comfortably indeed

and, should you want to use the hatch, it opens automatically and can hold up to 1,400 litres with the back seats folded down. It’s a mile-muncher for sure – an absolute pleasure to drive, whatever the journey.
