Movement to Ensure Local Food Security

PA/MD Farm-to- Consumer Alliance intends to help local people fi nd and pur- chase food directly from farms. To ensure food security in our
area, the group has created a map, database and Facebook group to connect people to local farms that sell direct to the customer. Sponsors include Felton Homestead, Smith’s Hidden Acres
Farm and Sonnewald Natural Foods. Felton Homestead is the fi rst private biomed-friendly intentional farm residence for adults with autism spectrum disorders.

Tradition Drives Innovation at Sonnewald

Family Days on the Farm T
he Commu- nity Alliance For
Responsible Eco- farming (CARE) will present the ninth annual Family Days on the Farm from 4 to 8 p.m., July 24, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 25, at the David Lapp Farm. Highlights include educational seminars, homemaking ad-
vice, farmstead ideas, children’s activities, including a petting zoo and corn box, healthy baking, vegetable growing and more. Aſt er a Friday night keynote address, Saturday will provide more than 30 workshops, panel discussions and keynotes about homemak- ing, gardening, farmsteading, human health and nutrition and horses, as well as dairy demonstrations and children’s activities. Kathleen Reiff , event coordinator, states, “COVID-19 has
generated an explosion of interest in everything that Family Days has been off ering for eight years. We’re hopeful that people will spread the word about this event, especially to anyone who may be considering the path to self-suffi ciency and community resilience.” CARE provides an educational basis for down-to-earth ways
to advance nutrient-dense food for homesteaders and farmers while supporting sustainable and simpler lifestyles that promote cohesive, economical and healthy rural living skills, enabling future generations to farm with a positive attitude and strength- ened motivation.
