Provenance: Found embedded in clay at the bottom of a large deep pond at Grange Farm, Perivale, and sold with old handwritten note: ‘[the pond] which I had emptied and cleansed. The farm was a Henry VIII dairy farm, patronised also by Queen Elizabeth - The pond had not been emptied within the memory of them and several relics of the olden time were found in the mud thrown out - 1. a spoon of brass - and also 2. a mug of the old Delf [sic] ware with blue enamel figures on the grout. It is very thick and shaped thus…I also found a sword with a basket hilt such as the cavaliers usually wore. There was no scabbard/the metal is greatly corroded. I have no doubt it had been thrown into the pond for concealment at the time of the Civil War. NB: The medal is descrd [sic] in the 38th vol of the Gents Mag, page 464 [signed] J.F’
