The inclusion of the French Arms on N 8692 is highly unusual; perhaps the issuer was French. Ansell Carter, grocer 73

N 8629 was issued from Drury Lane at the “Corner of Blackmor Street”. It is one of only two tokens to mention Blackmoor Street, the other being the exceedingly rare N 8628, the Norweb example of which was donated to the British Museum. In an article in the Newsletter for the London Topographical Society (No. 68, May 2009) R.H. Thompson proposed that Blackmoor Street gained its name from the establishment of Edward Lovell, tobacconist, called the Two Black Moors, from which N 8628 was issued

£80-£100

Provenance: *N 8712 R.A. Nott Collection, Norweb Collection, Spink Auction 212, 28-9 March 2012, lot 668 (part) [from Seaby]; BW. 898 J.L. Wetton Collection, Spink Auction 74, 29 November 1989, lot 173 (part), bt M.J. Dickinson September 2014; BW. 900 bt J. Higginbotham May 2015.

P.D. Greenall (BNJ 1991) considered that Eagle Street was in the Holborn area, but it is not clear why he came to that conclusion. A Richard Dixon is recorded in the Spitalfields area in the Hearth Tax Return for Lady Day 1666, so it is more likely that the Eagle Street in that location (also known as Grey Eagle Street) was the place of issue. Unusually, BW. 900 appears to place the initial of the surname on the bottom right of the triad of initials, where the wife’s initial would usually be found
