IN DEPTH

At your fi ngertips: health libraries directory

David Law explains how the latest online version of the Health Library & Information Services Directory is maintained by regional editors and aims to be a comprehensive, easy to-search resource.

DIRECTORIES have been a mainstay of libraries since the 18th century, in their earliest form largely trade directories created by trade bodies. The fi rst telephone directory was published in Britain in 1880, two years after the world’s fi rst directory was published in Connecticut. Until the turn of the 21st century, paper directories were the fi rst point of call for many when trying to track down a person, association or company by telephone or address.

Of course, the web has radically altered the way individuals now browse, search and even store directory-type information. You can fi nd information from any connected device and it will even provide directions to the listing and an embedded telephone number that will instantly put you in contact with a relevant individual in the organisation, company or service.

From print beginnings The fi rst printed Directory of Medical Libraries in the British Isles was published in 1957 with the fi nal 11th edition published in 2002 as the Health Library and Infor- mation Services Directory for the UK and Republic of Ireland. This was edited by Julie Ryder, who continued in this role until her retirement in 2018. Under her stewardship, the directory moved to an online version in 2006 with the site being hosted originally by the National Library for Health, before being handed over to Wirral Support Services in its various organisational guises before a major redevelopment exercise was under- taken, also in 2018, that saw a new host company being contracted.
