Carnegie and Greenaway longlists revealed
THE longlists for this year’s CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals have been published, with 40 titles mak- ing the cut – 20 for each medal. There was a record number of entries for the medals which celebrate the best in chil- dren’s writing and illustrations, with the 14 youth librarians who make up the judging panel reading a total of 254 different titles each before deciding on the longlist. The next step will be the release of the
short list on 19 March, before the eventual winners are announced in June. For the first time, there will also be awards for the favourite books of the shadowing groups, voted for by children. This year’s longlists are the first to be revealed since the awards were handed a new mission to recognise a diverse range of voices and perspectives. It features a variety of styles – from poetry and graph-
ic novels, to verse novels and a novella. It also covers a wide-range of issues that affect young people today. These include depression, assisted suicide, controlling behaviour, grief, gender conformity, the refugee crisis and women’s rights. And two books are in the running for both medals: The Lost Words, written by Robert Macfarlane and illustrated by Jackie Morris, and Norse Myths: Tales of Odin, Thor and Loki, written by Kevin Cross- ley-Holland and illustrated by Jeffrey Alan Love.
Alison Brumwell, Chair of the judging panel, said: “The authors and illustrators recognised this year for their outstand- ing achievements have produced works which entertain, challenge, inspire, and even outrage. The 40 books selected by judges offer intimate insights into family life, superb world-building and thought-
ful, incisive explorations of complex themes and issues. Young readers have the opportunity to encounter characters in a diverse range of narratives who both reflect their own experiences and build empathy for different ways of living. This year’s shadowing groups will have plenty to debate and discuss.” The shadowing scheme where children join CKG book clubs to read and discuss shortlisted books will commence after those lists have been released next week. Participants will then be able to vote for their favourite titles in both the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medal with the inau- gural Shadowers’ Awards being presented at the main ceremony on 18 June.
