Space to student ratio

“Secondly we want to provide more space like the student centre for taught course post graduate students to make that space to students ratio even better. They are the two main drivers and, again, it’s about improving the student experience.” One major issue will be identifying a new site – the new student centre was built on the last remaining vacant site in UCL’s cen- tral London property portfolio. And as Paul points out the arrival of 1,000 new learning spaces does not necessarily free up space elsewhere on campus. He said: “I don’t think learning space does work like that because what you have actually done by providing extra facilities is increase expectations. What I suspect will happen is that the Student Centre will be full and all the existing spaces will be full as well, so in reality you will not release any space that can be re-purposed. “It’s a bit like building roads – the more you build, the more people will use them. There is not a finite demand on learning spaces – I suspect that even if you provide one learning space for every student there would still be those who say they need more spaces.” IP
