Susanna is a wedding and event planner who has been responsible for some of the most talked about parties both here and abroad. A former city girl, she's swapped her heels for the Cotswolds and we're delighted that she will be sharing her musings with us each month.
Is it time for a holiday yet? Genuinely, can you believe we are nearly a quarter of the way through 2020, I mean, how did that even happen? I still have a box at the end of my bed with some Christmas presents in. Opened and appreciated, but not yet put away. Now I just feel massively lazy.
It’s all been a rather nutty first quarter. I’m already 7 events in, I’ve been to 3 European countries for site visits and my motorway miles would make Greta Thunberg weep! It’s like the palindrome which is 2020 has kicked everyone into action and it’s 'celebration central' all the way. Kids parties, naming ceremonies, birthdays and the “just because I damn well want one”, parties. It’s all systems go and they all want to get in on the act and create some fabulous craziness.
Maybe there’s just something uber-cool about celebrating matching digits which I'm just too uncool to know about?
Talking of being uncool, I’ve discovered a new fixation - the thrill of trying to make the ultimate Old Fashioned syrup. You see, Woodford Reserve tease you with a little sample bottle in a gift box, but they don’t sell a full-size version. Obviously I need one, so now spare moments are spent in the kitchen boiling up mixtures of brown sugar and orange peel. I think I might have found the perfect blend with the addition of orange bitters so if it proves popular you may well find me selling my wares at Tuesday’s Moreton Market. Only joking, I’d obviously send my husband because I couldn’t cope with the early starts and the thermal underwear.
There’s also been the usual flurry of the newly engaged. It looks like I may as well write off my social life and settle in to the madness of brides in 2021. Of course, any good wedding starts with a venue search and I'm not ashamed to admit that I hate them! It’s the most boring, thankless task known to man. I really should delegate and get one of the team to do it, but I think secretly I like to torture myself.
One of the biggest issues being venues which have a midnight cut- off. I mean, really, who wants to be sent to bed at midnight? I’m just about getting my groove on at midnight, warming up the twinkle toes and getting ready to bust out the arm movements (don’t be fooled or anything, this isn’t a weekly thing, most nights I can be found in my White Company PJ’s, trying to stay awake past 10pm.) No one needs that kind of Cinderella o’clock negativity in their life!
The upside is that it often forces clients to look abroad, and as you know I’m a sucker for a destination wedding. This means that my venue searches are now worldwide, just to add to the torture. So excuse me whilst I go and fetch a giant helping of my Old Fashioned syrup to see me through the next few weeks.
