• Talk naturally and presume that the person understands what you are saying. This avoids the natural tendency to talk down or talk loudly to people with unclear speech, as if they don’t understand or have a hearing loss.


• Remember that a person’s expressive skills may not represent their ability.


• Use respectful and age-appropriate communication.


• Be on the lookout for alternative ways the person communicates, for example: - using a speech-generating device (AAC) (see page 18) - using a communication book to supplement speech - supplementing speech with gestures/body language/ abbreviated sign - writing things down - having a support person familiar with their preferred communication style.
