The following strategies are helpful when communicating with the assistance of an interpreter:


• Make sure that the person you ask to help speaks the same dialect as the client • Approach the client together. • Speak directly to the client – NOT the interpreter. • Use clear, short sentences. • Pause after each sentence to allow the interpreter to repeat what you have said. • Use the strategies as listed above to ensure the client is understanding the questions.
