n 1939, when southern Alberta was struggling out of the great depression, a group of Medicine Hat

Businessmen held a meeting and formed the first Co-op in Medicine Hat.

Reverand Bainbridge, J. Lorraine, J.T. Cuyler, A. McNaughton, J.S. McNaught and Mrs. J.C. Middleton started the venture and sold 500 ten-dollar shares to residents of the city and district.

Bill Moore of Brooks was the first manager and was succeeded two years later by Charlie Carr.

The United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) took over the supervision shortly after and installed Merve Hill as Manager, he was followed by Jack Rust in 1947. C.R. May was appointed General Manager.

In 1951 the Alberta Co- operative Wholesale Association Limited (ACWA) purchased the store from UFA along with several others in the province and set them up as a retail division of the wholesale. Still operating under the ACWA, the store was moved from the 300 block 6th Ave. SE to the 6th Ave SE location. It consisted of a food floor, hardware and appliances.
