WHAT’S NEW FOR YOU THIS NEW YEAR?

Dr Claire Olivier (BDS) reviews the key trends in cosmetic surgery and predicts what will can expect to see more of in 2020

New Year is traditionally a time when we feel really motivated to set goals and take action. For many of us it’s that time to address an aspect of how our bodies look and in 2020 the predictions are an ever-increasing number will take action, and as a result encourage us to feel more confident about ourselves.

To that end I was interested to read the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) latest published statistics on the latest trends in body-shaping procedures. Those stats revealed that the top five procedures were: • Breast augmentation • Liposuction • Nose reshaping • Eyelid surgery • Tummy tuck * Source: ASPS 2018

34

Interestingly, both breast augmentation and liposuction procedures rose by 4% and 5% respectively (from 2017’s stats) and there was a slight decrease in the number of facial procedures carried out. The number of non-surgical cosmetic treatments also increased in 2018 with body treatments showing double digit growth:

A CONTINUING STRONG FOCUS ON THE BODY With consumers focus remaining firmly on the body it may not surprise you to read that the number of Liposuction procedures increased by more than 12,000. At my clinics we work with clients who, having undergone treatment, report improved self-esteem, life satisfaction and feelings of attractiveness. With an increasing number of options available when it comes to procedures and treatments, plus non-surgical body treatments continuing to grow in popularity as results become ever more impressive, what options are really available to you in order to gain the results you want, safely?

LET’S LOOK AT LIPOSUCTION Liposuction is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of fat deposits from underneath the skin. It is performed with a tube called a cannula, connected to a suction or vacuum with the patient being under general anaesthetic, local anaesthetic or, in some cases, heavy IV sedation. Liposuction patients can require several weeks off work for recovery and results are expected to be very noticeable however it is technique dependent with a very small margin for error.

Liposuction, like any other surgery, comes with its own risks. It is

imperative that your liposuction doctor is experienced, qualified, certified and, most importantly, abides to the highest levels of safety and ethical standards.

NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS There are several non-surgical options to Liposuction which utilise either heat or cold. With fat sitting just below the skins surface it has been scientifically proven that fat responds more quickly to cold as a treatment than to heat which is a key reason why trends towards Cryolipolysis, or fat freezing, to remove fat cells continue. Non-surgical treatments that utilise Cryolipolysis include CoolSculptingR and 3D-Lipo.

MORE ABOUT CRYOLIPOLYSIS In 2008 Harvard Medical School scientists Manstein et al demonstrated that under carefully controlled conditions, subcutaneous fat cells are naturally more vulnerable to the effects of cold than surrounding tissue. With more than 50 clinical papers demonstrating efficacy and safety, FDA-cleared** CoolSculpting® was developed.

**US Food & Drug Administration

MY RECOMMENDATIONS For a non-surgical alternative to Liposuction explore treatments that fully utilise Cryolipolysis (fat freezing). Remember cold over heat give in my opinion a much better result! Look at each treatment carefully and consider: • The results achieved by using it (CoolSculpting® continues to be the world’s number 1 fat freezing and body sculpting treatment with over seven million treatments successfully conducted worldwide and an equally impressive 97% client satisfaction record) • It’s proven track record • Whether it’s FDA-cleared (the US Food and Drug Administration) – the highest standard that an aesthetic treatment can attain
