Your single ‘Fired Up’ marks a new era for your music, as you’ve described your sound up until this point as being retrospective on your childhood, whereas your new music is about you growing up. Was this a natural progression for you? Yes for sure! My music will always be very personal and honest, I’ve just grown up and that’s exciting to me. I’ve been writing since I was 12/13 and I’m 22 now, so I have a lot more to write about. I wrote ‘Fired Up’ on a trip to LA at the beginning of the year. I was so used to writing about the struggles I went through as a child that I hadn’t even thought about the fact that through everything I had been through, I’d finally got to the point in my life where I was able to move on and let someone love me for the first time. I wrote it with my boyfriend, so it holds a very special place in my heart.
You've talked openly about personal experiences, in particular your relationship with your father in your lyrics; do you find it cathartic to write about these? Song writing is a very cathartic process for me. It’s allowed me to grow so much as a person and process so many feelings and situations I’ve been through in my life. If I didn’t have song writing, I would’ve gone mad by now.
Have you begun working on a follow-up to EP 'Why Her Not Me'? YES! I’ve got lots of new music I’m very excited about. There will be more info to give soon, but you’re going to be hearing a lot more from me!
I have to ask…supporting Lewis Capaldi on tour, how did this support slot come about and what kind of set did you deliver? I’ve known Lewis for a while and when he invited me to come on tour with him, it was a no brainer! And the set, well, Emotion! My songs all stem from personal experience and I’m very open about the stories behind them. It’s so important to me that when I listen to music, I can feel it, so I guess people can expect to feel something and hopefully come away feeling connected.
You had a pretty amazing year in 2019, opening with coming third on BBC Sound of 2019 and going on to tour the world. What has been your highlight so far? I know it sounds cliché, but everything! I had a moment after touring Asia this summer where I really had to take a step back and think about everything we’ve achieved this year. I’m still so young and get to do what I love every day; it’s all been a highlight.
