Aimee swaps partying for her own business
TEENAGE entrepreneur Aimee Hobbs’ love of make-up started when she was in her teens, writes Jade Schopman. Now the 19-year-old is set to
open her first make-up studio in Maidstone town centre, despite being told by teachers she was “too clever” for the beauty industry. Aimee, of Simpson Road, Snod-
land, says she aims to be living proof that you do not need a de- gree to succeed in life. The former Maidstone Grammar
School student said: “As soon as you tell somebody you’re going to college to study make-up, they au- tomatically think you’re stupid. “I’m proof you can have really
good grades but still want to do something other than university, like you are pressured to do in school.” Aimee started her business from
her bedroom and practised on her friends before setting up an Insta- gram page to showcase her work
and book potential clients. She now employs a trainee artist at Aimee Hobbs Make-Up Studios
and is set to open her own shop at the Royal Star Arcade. She said: “I was one of two peo-
ple in my whole year to go to col- lege – it’s just something schools, especially grammar schools, do not encourage you to do. “At my college enrolment, the
teacher saw my grades and told me ‘you are way too clever for this, you should be at uni.’ “I want people to know univer-
sity is not the only route to success. I left school at 16 and was quite badly bullied, I didn’t have a rea- son to stay there after my GCSEs. “People say I’m lucky to be get-
ting my own shop, but I’ve worked hard for this. I have had to make a lot of sacrifices to get here. “My friends say I’m wasting my
youth because instead of partying at the weekend,
I stay in, earn
money and build my business. “I went against what was ex-
pected of me to create my own opportunities.”
Man jailed for
attack at hotel A MAIDSTONE man who at- tacked a woman at a hotel has been jailed for 16 months. The court heard how Nathan
Lewis put his hands around the girl’s throat and squeezed until she passed out. He also punched the woman, from Gillingham, in the face several times. Maidstone Crown Court was
taken through the events that led to the attack at a hotel in Bromp- ton Road, Gillingham, on the morning of February 22. The 21-year-old, from Leicester
Road, was later arrested in a nearby street. He admitted caus- ing actual bodily harm. The sentence was imposed at
Maidstone Crown Court on Fri- day, November 1, along with a five-year restraining order. PC Harry Groves said: “This
appalling assault left the victim traumatised and with lasting emotional effects. She sustained injuries to her face and neck in an entirely unprovoked attack. “I am pleased the courts have
recognised the serious nature of this incident.” Business Focus

repairs and adjustments through to new sets we can offer a complete denture care service. Although the work is done ‘in house’ with
partial dentures and other more complex cases we work closely with the dentist. It is essential that the health of any remaining teeth are checked out before denture construction. This is necessary to ensure the prosthesis is a long term solution. We can accept referrals from you own dentist or we can arrange an appointment with one of our dental colleagues at your first appointment. Having the laboratory on the premises reduces
the waiting time for some services, some services like repairs can even be done while you wait. It is also an advantage as some larger adjustments can be done in house We pride ourselves in making sure everyone we
treat is happy with the product we produce and want our patients to have the confidence that their denture has been constructed with the utmost care and using only quality materials. Our aim is to make people comfortable with our treatment and confident with our product.
