MAYFLOWER 400 IN HARLESTON

THE Mayflower 400 logo is designed to link all the activities planned under the coordinating umbrella of Harleston’s Future to commemorate the voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers (among whom were four members of a Redenhall family) to the New World and the religious freedoms they sought.

Anyone wishing to

contribute a Mayflower event and be featured in the official programme, website and PR, may seek permission to use this logo under licence. For full details of the licence fee and regulations go to info@ harlestonsfuture.org.uk The logo was commissioned

by Mayflower 400 coordinator Trevor Graham and created by local artist, ScribblyRoo, the Harleston & Waveney Art Trail member who designed and painted the beautiful Harleston Hare for the Go, Go Hares trail in 2018. With a BA (Hons) in Graphic Communications from the Bath School of Art and Design, she is an illustrator and jewellery maker and will have a stall at the Harleston Christmas Market.

Recent

studio commissions also included posters and new logo for Harleston players.

The

clear lines of the galleon sailing into sight at a purposeful angle epitomises the spirit of hope, determination and the courage of those who dared everything for a new life across the seas 400 years ago. ScribblyRoo said, “I was excited to design the Mayflower 400 logo for Harleston as it combines my love of both art and history.

I

had no idea of my home town’s connection to the Mayflower before Harleston’s Future approached

me about this

project. Having seen how positive the Harleston Hare was for the community I’m really pleased to contribute something that may be even

more meaningful and bring together

all National kinds of Mayflower

400 celebrations will run from Thanksgiving 2019 to Thanksgiving 2020. Harleston will contribute to the national launch on November 28th by unveiling a huge mobile suspended from the roof of St John’s Church.

Under the

direction of Ian Carstairs, 400 origami boats, coloured by the town’s

Academy

schoolchildren, will float there in the run up to Christmas. A

taste of traditional Thanksgiving food for the children will accompany the November launch.

to be a Mayflower-themed Treasure Hunt around

Harleston Young

There is town,

with prizes donated by local retail and other businesses, between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Farmers are going to sculpt a spectacular sailing ship from straw bales for display on the Renault chicken farm’s field at the end of Redenhall Road - which will be a significant symbol of the special Redenhall link to the Mayflower journey. Keep eyes peeled for further Mayflower launch initiatives, and do take time to visit St John’s to see the Mayflower mobile. With a plethora of ideas copious

and enthusiasm

being brought to the table, a Mayflower follow-up meeting is planned for November 14th at 7pm at The Swan Hotel when group and project leaders will bring the town up-to-date with progress - and probably float more ideas! All Mayflower news and information will be posted, and constantly updated, on the website. To see what’s going on and how you can join in go to the Mayflower section

local

creative people to educate our community about this historic event.”

of visitharleston.org.uk Looking further into the Mayflower festival, a local team – supported by Harleston Players – are planning to present a large community play in July titled “1620: A New World Odyssey”. Written especially for the town, it will tell the story of Edward and Samuel Fuller from Redenhall and the other families who crossed the ocean, and the people they met when they arrived on America’s eastern seaboard.

This, with

exciting complementary street theatre, promises a spectacular series of events. Everyone is invited to join in and help – actors, singers, costume- and prop-makers, organisers, local history researchers.

Further

details in future editions. There will be an open meeting in The Swan on Wednesday 4th December at 7.30pm to disclose

more about this project. will

be another meeting

There on

Wednesday 27th November at 7pm for people interested in joining the team working on costumes for the play. Dressmakers, pattern cutters, knitters, embroiderers, fabric and mask makers and painters are all needed.
