solution to piggyback rail conundrum
German rail operator TX Logistik (TXL) has demonstrated a new system that would allow normal road trailers to be liſted on and off piggyback rail wagons without additional strengthening. It demonstrated the NiKRASA transhipment system to customers at Oredea in Romania, saying that it was particularly
applicable to the east European market where there are few craneable trailers. TXL has operated a five days a week rail service between Cologne and Curtici in Romania since spring 2018, transporting mainly megatrailers. The NiKRASA system uses a positioning aid and a loading adapter.

European Commission (EC) has confirmed the UK will be treated like any other non-EU country for security filing purposes. ONE adds that this is not limited to cargo discharged in an EU port later in the rotation, but also includes foreign cargo remaining on board transiting the EU and destined for subsequent non-EU ports.
Jane Simpson has joined Dover Harbour Board. She has held senior positions at Network Rail, and was recently as head of capital delivery for Severn Trent Water. She will provide increased support to the board’s diversity agenda, the port being a signatory to the Maritime UK Women in Maritime pledge to drive gender diversity throughout the organisation and wider industry.

Ernst Schulze has taken up the reigns as DP World’s UK chief executive officer from Chris Lewis, who is retiring aſter 36 years in the ports industry. Schulze will oversee the Southampton and London Gateway container terminals, the Logistics Park at London Gateway and customs clearance provider Community Network Services. He was previously in Ecuador where he has been heading up the development of DP World Posorja. Chris Lewis has meanwhile been appointed a non-executive director of container logistics company, Maritime Transport.
Hapag-Lloyd is to introduce a new South East India, Europe Express (IEX) service in October, alongside a Middle East-India-Africa Express (MIAX) in October. The weekly IEX will provide the only direct connection between South and East India and will be jointly operated with ONE, YML and COSCO, using nine 6,500teu vessels. The first departures are scheduled for 26 October. Calls include Visakhapatnam, Krishnapatnam, Chennai, Tuticorin, Colombo, Cochin and London Gateway.
Short sea operator Containerships is promising improved UK services as part of its new sailing schedule. There will be enhanced frequency and reduced transit time from the Baltic States to Great Britain and the continent; five weekly sailings from Poland to Great Britain; three weekly sailings to Teesport; and two weekly sailings to Tilbury with departures on Wednesday and Friday. The operator is also introducing a third LNG-powered 1,380teu vessel to its fleet.
Equipment leasing firm Union Tank Eckstein (UTA) has launched a ferry booking service, in partnership with UK-based specialist Freightlink. The new online platform offers 750 connections in more than 50 countries with over 40 ferry companies including Calais/ Dover and Hoek van Holland/Harwich.

Trial trains to run from London Gateway to the City
Rail operator Orion is to run a trial freight service from London Gateway to London Liverpool Street station next year, according to a report in Rail magazine. The trains, which are expected to operate in April or May next year, will use Class 769 bi-mode

Maritime industry helps Merseyside to thrive
The maritime sector clustered around the Mersey boosts business turnover in the Liverpool City Region by £2.0 billion, according to a new report
commissioned by
Mersey Maritime. The report, The Economic Contribution of the Maritime Sector in the Liverpool City Region which was produced in conjunction with Maritime UK and the
Centre for Economics and Business Research, also found that output across the sector had brown by 118% since 2010. It also produced 7,899 jobs in the city region in 2017.
The government has designated four further ports for movement of protected animals and plants in the event of a ‘no deal’ EU exit: Belfast Seaport, Dover, Eurotunnel and Holyhead. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, anyone wishing to move such specimens between the UK and the EU will need CITES documentation. Customs offices at the four ports will be designated and special CITES arrangements have been put in place to help minimise any delays. Belfast Seaport will also be designated to allow CITES movements between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland over the land border and by sea.
Felixstowe-based compliance specialist VARTAN Consultancy says it has successfully worked with Peel Ports Group to secure Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status across its five-strong UK port network.
European ferry booking service Freightlink Solutions says it has achieved its ambition to offer more than 1,000 different freight ferry routes, available online or via its multi-lingual reservations centre. The network connects more than 50 countries and includes ferry services both between countries or domestic island services. Freightlink concedes that some of the crossings on offer “are somewhat obscure” but are important in its bid to offer a one-stop shop. It now plans to increase the number of routes to between 1,500 and 1,750 by the end of the year.
DP World has expanded its container handling operation at the Port of Callao in Peru into a full maritime and logistics operation. Since building the greenfield Port of Callao, it has acquired maritime services company Cosmos Agencia Maritima, Neptunia and Triton Transport, which run logistics hubs, warehouses, bonded storage and trucking.
