KNOWLEDGE of nature

Julie Lovett inspires wonder of the outdoors

t doesn’t take but a few minutes down a tree- shaded trail with Julie Lovett before she starts identifying dozens of plants and shar- ing unforgettable facts.

As park ranger interpreter at Bull Shoals-White

River State Park, Julie channels her own fascina- tion and curiosity of nature to the public, who ben- efit from her years of knowledge in the field. “Unless you know something, you tend to not

care about it,” Julie says, repeating a quote about the role of a park interpreter. If she can share an interesting fact — such as how lightning bugs light up — people will be more likely to remember it. “If they know it just a little bit, they will care a little more about the environment,” she says.

After years with the Arkansas Parks Department and the past years as an interpreter at the Bull Shoals-White River State Park, Julie Lovett is retiring, but not from her lifelong love of nature.
