COUNTRY LIFE IN BC • SEPTEMBER 2019 Island Holstein show and sale reflects quality

Quebec judge sorted through 80 entries to pick Jacobs Brady Alira as grand champion by AMANDA POELMAN DUNCAN—The rain in

the forecast did not dampen the two days of Holstein events at Cowichan Exhibition grounds on Vancouver Island in July as many dairy enthusiasts came out to enjoy the festivities. The event kicked off with a BBQ sponsored by WestGen in honour of their 75th anniversary. Over 175 people were served and the dinner brought out many of the famed Holstein breeders of the past including Burt and Sharon Youell and Doug Blair. The Vancouver Island Holstein Club decided to move their annual sale from October to July this year, which proved to be a very successful decision. Long- time auctioneer of the Vancovuer Island Holstein Sale, Ian Paton, dropped the gavel on 32 head of quality Holstein cattle from some of the Island’s deepest pedigrees as the sale realized a $2,948 average. The high seller, Wedgwood Airlift Laureen, a VG-85 two-year-old who is due in August, brought the highest price of $5,500 and was purchased by Westcoast Holsteins of Chilliwack.

The 46th edition of the Vancouver Island Holstein

Show kicked off the next day. Judge David Crack Jr. of Quebec sorted through 80 entries in this year’s show, which included 16 who made the trip over from the Fraser Valley. “While this might not be the biggest show I’ve

judged, the quality of cattle that came through the ring today was incredible,” said Crack, before selecting his grand champion. Jacobs Brady Alira, the winning four-year-old, was

selected as this year’s grand champion for Stanhope- Wedgwood of Cobble Hill. Alira was purchased by the partnership at the BC Spring Show this past March, where she was honourable mention grand champion that day. Stanhope-Wedgwood also captured the junior championship with Wedgwood

cow belonged to Willswikk Doorman Stephanie, owned by J. William Wikkerink Farms of Cobble Hill. After placing first in the junior three-year-old class, Stephanie would go on to be intermediate champion as well as adding best Island-bred cow and best udder of the show to her day’s winnings. Stephanie narrowly edged out her herdmate, Willswikk Doorman Clever, who was reserve intermediate champion. The pair of cows also helped to anchor the winning senior breeder’s herd for Willswikk, who also secured the premier breeder and junior premier

exhibitor banners for the day. In addition, the Wikkerink family also went home with reserve junior champion after Vyecroft Lautrust Bianca won the fall calf class.

Honourable mention grand champion was won

by Silvermaple Braxton Calypso, owned by Silvermaple Holsteins of Ladysmith. Calypso, the winning mature cow with one superior lactation to her credit, would also bring home the total performance award with BCA’s of 311-308-293.
