Teachers receive valuable lessons

about farming Manitoba counterpart likes Ag in the Classroom’s teacher program

by DAVID SCHMIDT

ABBOTSFORD—Close to 50 teachers got a first-hand look at a variety of agricultural operations during the Educators Agriculture Tour of the Fraser Valley, August 21-22. Organized by BC

Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation (BCAITC) and the BC Agriculture Council, the day and a half tour visited Golden Valley Foods (egg grading) and Locarno Dairy Farm in Abbotsford, Westcoast Vegetables (peppers) in Delta, Krause Berry Farm and Estate Winery in Langley and Golden Eagle Aquaculture in Agassiz. At Westcoast Vegetables, they also participated in a discussion of innovation in agriculture with 4-Her Sara Kate Smith, chair of the National Youth Advisory Committee, CropLife Canada vice-president of communications and member services Nadine Strik, organic grower and 2014 BC Outstanding Young Farmer Lydia Ryall of Cropthorne Farm in Delta, and BC Cattlemen’s Association beef production specialist Bree Patterson. Their final stop was at

Maple Ridge Secondary School where Red Seal Chef Trevor Randle, the founding chef of BCAITC’s Take a Bite of BC program, and teaching chef Karen Carruthers guided the participants through preparing their own lunch. Thanks to generous sponsors, cost of the tour, including an overnight stay at the Sandman Abbotsord Airport Hotel, was only $50/person. “We have done lots of one-

day tours in the past but this was our first overnight tour,” BCAITC executive director Pat Tonn said. Patricia Regan, a Red Seal

program culinary teacher in Vancouver, said she went on the tour “so I can teach my kids where the food they are preparing comes from,” adding she likes to take her students out to farms and this tour gives her more ideas as to what options are out there.

While most of the teachers

came from the Vancouver and Fraser Valley, the group included several teachers from Vancouver Island and

the Okanagan. Marlene Kulak, a biology teacher at Kelowna Secondary, first met AITC staff at a science workshop. She applied for the tour “partly out of my own curiosity and partly to be able to tell my Grade 12 class about possible jobs in agriculture when we talk about jobs. This tour makes me smarter so when kids ask me questions, I have the answers.”

Janine Jackson, a teacher

at Walnut Grove Elementary, says she loves BCAITC programs. “I already do the Spuds in

Tubs and have applied for a Tower Garden.” She says the Spuds in Tubs

program is particularly rewarding. “At first, some of the kids

are afraid to even stick their hands in the dirt but by the time they are harvesting the tubers, they are all super excited.” Manitoba AITC executive

director Sue Clayton was a keenly interested observer on the tour. Manitoba is a major potato producer and Clayton

piloted the made-in-BC Spuds in Tubs program at five schools last year. Because of the positive response, she intends to expand the program to more schools in future years. She also hopes to duplicate the educators tour. “We would love to do a teachers tour in Manitoba so I came to BC to check out how they do it here,” she said. In addition to the Educators Agriculture Tour, BCAITC conducts an intensive week-long Summer Institute

for teachers in conjunction with the UBC. “We usually limit the SI to

30 teachers but this year we had 36 teachers attend,” Tonn said.
