growers were caught off- guard by new European Union shipping requirements that kicked in September 1, but they believe they’ve got time to prepare their operations to ship in 2020. The rules, announced


August 22, require all EU trading partners to have a “systems approach” to certify shipments of fresh apples, pears, cherries, blueberries (and related species),


potatoes and tomatoes. BC exported more than $7 million worth of these products to the EU in 2018. Systems-based protocols


focus on five areas: field and production practices, preharvest management, postharvest handling, inspection and certification protocols and shipping and distribution measures. “It’s not a great situation,


but luckily we’ve got the off- season to work through and find out what the EU requirements [are],” BC Cherry


Association president Sukhpal Bal told Country Life in BC. “We’re confident the CFIA will work through with their EU counterparts and address the questions the EU has regarding some of the pests in our area.” Bal says some growers have shipped to the EU for more than 25 years.
