in pairs keeps their energy levels up, both because the work is lighter and also because they egg each other on and enjoy the work more! This encouragement can be particularly helpful when tackling steep banks, ditches and other obstacles which are common out in the woods. Size doesn't matter when it comes to teamwork, one of our best ever logging teams was a 13hh cobstallion working with a 17hh Brabant stallion. The most important thing is that your team like each other and trust you!

Hitch in Farm working horses in West Devon, England, has now been running for 4 years, allowing people to come and get hands on experience with working horses in forestry and farming. We keep and work a number of different breeds of horses, including our big heavy horses, but also Hafflingers, gypsy cobs, Welsh cobs, new forests etc. They are an extremely mixed bag of breeds because many of them have been taken from slaughter or sent to us as dangerous animals. It is run by myself, Ellie Paddock and my husband Mike Paddock, who was the British Horse Loggers first apprentice, and Head Horseman to HRH the Prince of Wales.

We run horse logging experiences throughout the winter months, why not come along and try your hand with the horses? Group training courses are being held throughout the winter, and private tuition is always available. We also offer gift vouchers for an alternative gift idea!

16th/17th of November 2019 - Is our next 2 day logging course, which will teach you all the basics and maneuvers on the first day on our farm, before heading into our little copse to try some of them out. On day 2 we will carriage drive a team of 4 to the woods, and you will get to try your hand logging on a real logging contract! Before a carriage drive home again!

23rd November 2019 / 18th January 2020 / 22nd February 2020- Come along and have a go on our one day introductory horse logging course in Sheepwash, West Devon, going through all the basics and getting hands on getting timber out in the woods. With a maximum of 5 people so you get plenty of time on the reins!
