SELECT AWARDS 2019

Decades of devotion to workers’ welfare

Selfless union officer Bernard is honoured with SELECT’S Lifetime Achievement Award

U

nion official Bernard McAulay’s decades of dedication to helping others have been recognised with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bernard – national officer for the

construction, allied trades and technicians sector of Unite – has devoted his career to improving the welfare of workers. He has played a powerful part in the fight to give construction workers a voice and secure good quality, sustainable jobs in the industry. And the impact of his efforts has been enormous, making a huge difference to the working conditions of countless individuals. SELECT Managing Director

Alan Wilson said: “Bernard’s focus over the course of many years of high-level union activity and negotiation has always been on the workers he represented and he has never sought the spotlight for himself. “For that reason alone, among many,

many others, we are pleased to bring into the public domain the selfless efforts that Bernard and his colleagues in the trade union movement have made over the decades to try to create a joined-up industrial strategy.” Alan added: “Bernard, like many of the people he represents, has always been a hard worker. “He is not only tenacious and

determined but is well-known throughout the industry as being very capable of driving a hard bargain on

behalf of his members. We are delighted to be able to pay tribute to him.” The prestigious award was presented to Bernard during the ceremony by Neil MacEachern from the category’s sponsor Schneider Electric. Fiona Harper, Head of Employment Affairs at SELECT and SJIB Secretary, said: “Bernard has had a long and distinguished career focused on improving construction standards, protecting workers and fighting against poor construction practices. “In a huge variety of roles, he has been at the forefront of a long and determined drive towards creating a safe and fair working environment and ensuring a sustainable industry rate of pay for workers. “This is a very appropriate award for someone who has devoted his life to the improvement of conditions for others.”
