COUCH POTATO

Everywhere I have been lately people are talking about Ken Burns’ History of Country Music series on PBS. It really is good (as of episode 4, I will continue to watch them all) but the night before it started, they aired a pre- recorded “Country Music at the Ryman” two- hour concert hosted by Burns and it was a doozy. Vince Gill headed up the backup band, made up of Nashville’s finest. Just a few of the highlights: Larry Gatlin, who I had not seen in years, like the rest of us he’s gone gray, but his voice is still silky smooth. He paid tribute to Kris Kristofferson with a fine rendition of “Sunday Morning Comin Down.” There were very kind words spoken about Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt, and Rodney Crowell sang “Poncho & Lefty,” Van Zandt’s biggest hit. We were told that the Outlaws album –Waylon, Willie, Tompall Glaser and Jessi Colter was country music’s first ever platinum album, later becoming double platinum. Vince Gill sang a beautiful version of Dolly’s “I Will Always Love You” and Roseanne Cash paid tribute to her dad, Johnny, with “I Still Miss Someone.” There was so much more, but to close out the show everyone came out onstage to do Mother Maybelle Carter’s eternal “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” with each singer singing a line in the song. Well-rehearsed and just plain good. Plus, Dwight Yoakam was there and I always liked him. The series is very interesting and educational, tracing country music’s roots from the 1930’s to 1974. Highly rec- ommended. . .Netflix is quickly becoming my fa- vorite destination on the old telly. The new

Breaking Bad movie, El Camino is as good as any movie in the theaters. It trakes up where the series left off, with Jessie being held prisoner and tortured, and looking to escape the madness that he has brought on himself. All the familiar faces are there, including Mike and of course, Walter. Excellent. . .Speaking of Netflix, I just saw an awesome documentary on music mogul Clive Davis clled Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives. I knew the man was important to the history of music, but man oh man, he crossed all lines, bringing us Whitney Houston, the Outlaws, Patti Smith, Barry Manilow, Sean Puffy Combs, and dozens of other superstars. His story is quite interesting, especially when the label he founded, Arista, pushed him out of his own company. Of course, he just started another company! Brilliant man. . . I recently did another Walking Dead binge. Started with the very first episode and watched all the way up til now. The new season recently bagan and it looks great! I must say that when it first started, the sister show Fear the Walking Dead did not draw me in. but they have added great characters (including Morgan and Dwight from TWD) and it is just as good at the Walking Dead. Jena Elfman is fantastic. All of the characters are and the script is awe- some. And don’t get me started on Virginia! Ginny is like a female Negan in cowgirl clothing! They just left us with a heck of a cliff hanger. Is Morgan going to die, or is his favorite saying true- “I don’t die.” Great stuff. . . The final season of The Good Place just started. It’s a guilty pleas- ure of mine. The whacky comedy about the after- life makes me laugh, and I love Kristen Bell. . . Season 3 of 13 Reasons Why is infectious. A lit- tle too true to life on teen suicide, but well written and acted.. . Devil at the Crossroads is a great documentary on Netflix about the King of the Delta Blues, Robert Johnson. . . Season 3 of Jes- sica Jones has been great. Not your typical super hero, and quite the alcoholic! . . . Dead to Me was highly enjoyable. Christina Applegate has come a heck of a long way since Married with Children…. Remember when ER was the only
