My Favorite Products From the 2019 Indie Beauty Expo NYC

entrepreneur, Nader Naeymi-Rad, IBE was established to help the fast-growing category of indie brands connect to buyers, press, consumers and investors. IBE’s mission is to provide a platform to recognize, showcase and celebrate independent beauty brands and to support the growth and success of the entrepreneurs behind them. Each month, I’ll be using and reviewing the plethora of skincare and cosmetic samples I picked up that are organic and toxic-free to support a holistic lifestyle!

A Body Barrier WoolbarTM : Just like your face,

the skin on your body can get congested and lead to a build-up of bacteria. This product is su- per cool. It starts out as a “bar of soap” with one side having micro-wool fibers to create a gentle exfoliating experience and over multiple uses becomes a cloth-like texture. Marketed as a soap nutrient bar, it’s sulfate-free and delivers Vitamin

E and amino acids to support your skin’s microbiome and barrier function. Contains 850mg of lambs wool. Con: There are a couple of questionable ingredients that are marketed as plant-derived. https://bodybarrier.com/products/woolbar

Leaf People Exfoliating Wash and Body Lotion:

Loved both! Their botanically focused skin care products are formulated and manufactured by Medical Herbalist Julie Levin. They avoid us- ing any synthetically manufactured ingredients (including glycols, silicones, benzoates, alcohols, disodium EDTA, fragrances). Plant based nutrients are the most compatible with our bodies and eas-

ily absorbed through the skin. The exfoliating wash has a soothing lavender scent and was gentle and refreshing. The body lotion is non-greasy and has a mousse like consistency. https://leafpeople. com/product/aloe-lavender-exfoliating-daily-face-wash/

Humble Natural Deodorant: You have to agree – it’s next to impossible to find an all-natural deodorant that ACTUALLY works. This might be the one. Priding themselves on the simplest deodorant with the few- est ingredients, Humble is a pioneer in the natural deodorant industry. With just four

to five organic and all-natural ingredients that you can pronounce, their deodorant is sure to keep you dry—a simple solution to a sticky problem! I loved the essential lavender scent and I love that it’s crafted in the beautiful city of Taos, New Mexico. https://humblebrands.com

RG Cosmetics Pataua Shampoo: Amazing scent and

leaves hair soft and silky. The Pataua is a palm tree native to the Amazon whose rich oil is one of the most fortifying ingredients available in nature. It works wonders on fine and fragile hair, giving it four times the strength. Pataua is also a natural and efficient heat protectant and can make hair grow faster than normal. https://www.rgcosmetics. com/product/pataua-shampoo-damaged-hair/

Why We All Need to Apply Self-Care

meet with a client who said they didn’t do any of my homework and actually the day they thought they would do it, they rested instead. There is this sense of guilt in admitting it to me. My response is, “Great! I’m glad you listened to your body.”

W We are so conditioned to keep doing

and never allow ourselves time to recoup, rejuvenate and replen- ish our souls and bodies. Society makes us think that being busy is a preferred state of being and having downtime is nonproductive boredom. For me, I operate with my clients in a “no judgement zone” and would never release condemnation when they tell me that they haven’t moved forward in their project. We all need down time and me time. We all need to take a deep breath and replenish our think- ing, our creativity and our energy. Sometimes we don’t even know what to do to administer “self-care” to ourselves. I’ve created a list of ideas that might help propel you to enjoy time with yourself.

• Bake something delicious and eat it without guilt

• Buy some flowers • Call a friend • Color or draw

• Create your own coffee break

• Do some gentle stretches • Drive somewhere new • Eat a meal in silence

• Enjoy your body – God created it

• Fly a kite

• Find a relaxing essential oil scent

• Go for a run • Go for a walk • Go to a Farmers Market • Go to a lake or ocean

• Go to a park • Go to bed early • Light a candle

• Let go of something causing stress

• Listen to music

• Do deep breathing exercises Paint on something other than paper

• Pet a furry animal Read a book

• Put on some music and dance

• Read or watch something funny

• Read poetry

• Sit outside and enjoy nature

• Take a bath
