From Dotty’s Desk

Autumn – and a new Inner Wheel year begins. We have a new President, Enid and a new International Inner Wheel President, our own GB and I member, Phyllis Charter. I am sure we all wish them a good year in office. We also have a new national charity, Riding for the Disabled and a new IIW logo – Together we Can – for this year.

The cooler days and longer nights still seem rather far away but from reading club and district publications, I see that events are being planned well into the future. That should help to get us all back into the swing of things.

Fun and Fellowship On Wheels!

Where might you see all in one place and all at one time:

• 2 current Inner Wheel club Presidents; • 19 past Presidents; • 1 current District Officer; • 5 past District Officers; and a total of ... • 30 Inner Wheel members, past and present?

A reasonable assumption might be at some Inner Wheel event but you could be wrong. The photograph shows just some of the many Inner Wheel members who were present in May at a meeting of ICFR in Shrewsbury.

ICFR was formed 50 years ago in the UK. It encourages us to get out and about, to make the most of our caravans and motorhomes and to visit great places we might otherwise never see.

The influence of Inner Wheel members on the activities of ICFR is considerable, whether as Area or UK committee members, or as rally organisers, and even as the people who frequently take the lead in family decisions on where to spend leisure time!

If you have got a caravan or a motorhome and you fancy adding a new dimension to your caravanning trips, why not come and join us? The £10 annual subscription could be the best £10 you ever spend!

Alice in Flowers

Following on from the success of the poppy display last year, the Inner Wheel Club of Leominster took on the responsibility of organising this year's display in the Buttercross Arcade in Leominster. The theme for this year’s Leominster in Bloom is children's literature and we decided to adopt Alice in Wonderland for the Arcade display.

Over several months, members have gathered to make flowers and assemble the displays. The whole Leominster Community got involved and people, young and old, have been making flowers by knitting, crocheting and crafting. All the primary schools joined in the project as well as people in care homes and the general public. The resulting display is delightful in its use of colour and design.

Council has agreed that I try a slight change to the timings of the magazines this year. As you already have this magazine, you will realise that I have kept the autumn one to the same schedule. The problem really occurs with the Spring magazine which as it stands – with a delivery date of early January – means that we cannot feature any of the numerous activities done on 10th January – Inner Wheel Day. There is then no chance to publish these as the Conference edition is normally very full.

To let us feature events in December and early January, I am asking for the material for 15th January to allow for the inclusion of articles relating to activities up to this point. The Spring magazine will therefore be delivered in early March. But what I really need is information about what you have done on Inner Wheel day - and plenty of good quality pictures. Please make sure that the people in the pictures are willing for these to be published.

I have, of course, asked permission of the District Editors who were at Leicester to show their group photo. The smiles represent the fun and fellowship which we shared while also getting down to a lot of hard work.

My address is as always dotty23iw9@yahoo.com Best wishes

Workington Derwent Inner Wheel a Wealth of Projects

Several members of the group took part in making the Heart Cushions for the Mabel Harrop Trophy and after one had been picked by members to be submitted, the remainder were taken by several members to the Breast Care Department at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven to be given to ladies who have had surgery. The staff were delighted to receive them.

The club has been active in supporting the Red Box Project and has been donating sanitary products at each meeting which are then sent to our local contact. On the same theme a local Physiotherapist who has been to Sierra Leone came to talk to us about the charity she and a friend set up to provide washable pads. Some of our members got together to make bags to carry them in.

On the social side, there we have a lot panned for the next few months starting with a trip to Dublin, Darts and Dominoes and a visit to the daughter of President Gail who has Alpacas. Once we have fed them and taken them for a walk, we will finish off with prosecco. So it’s not ALL work in Workington Derwent Inner Wheel!
