The Listening

Project BBC Radio 4

BBC radio producers have been gathering conversations between relatives or friends since 2012 capturing the nation in conversation to build a unique picture of our lives today, covering everything from living with Alzheimer’s to falling in love in the front seat of a Reliant Robin. Could you and a fellow Inner Wheel member be tempted to talk about Inner Wheel and what it means for you? By taking part you will also have the chance to be part of history as your conversation will be archived in the British Library’s permanent audio archive.

Installation of High Sheriff of

Bedfordshire Meryl Dolling Member of Luton North Inner Wheel

On Saturday 30th March, the ladies of the Inner Wheel Club of Luton North (D 26) and partners were privileged to be invited to witness and celebrate the Installation of Meryl Dolling as High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, an honour bestowed upon her for her many years of dedicated service to Luton and the County, in particular in the fields of education, employment and training. Meryl is the first woman from Luton to serve the County in this role and only the ninth woman High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in over a thousand years!

The role of High Sheriff is to represent HM The Queen in Bedfordshire with regard to law and order and in her Shrieval year, Meryl has committed to support the judiciary, police and emergency services to help bring communities together as well as emphasising the role that education can play in beating crime. It is her wish to meet as many charities and organisations as possible to highlight their contribution and impact on the community.

We wish Meryl a happy and successful year. Congratulations on an honour well deserved.

Tools for Self Reliance

At Aberdeen St Fittick Club, we are very fortunate to have as our International Service Organiser, Gette Cobban. In the past she has had some brilliant ideas and this year was no exception as she suggested we take part in the charity, “Tools for Self-Reliance”. Our aim was to provide the skills and materials to enable groups in Sierra Leone to attain tailoring skills.

We were asked to provide a number of items including pins, zips, thread, knitting needles, scissors etc. Much to Gette’s delight she was soon receiving bags full of items and even old sewing machines. Luckily for her we have a local delivery point in Aberdeen, which was just as well as Gette has four times filled her car to the brim.

Brigg Pimms and Prosecco in the Rain!

The Inner Wheel Club of Brigg, D127, organised a Pimms, Prosecco and Pate Garden Party to raise money for our International charity REMIT (Rotarians Eliminating Malaria in Tanzania) A lot of hard work went into planning and setting up the gazebos, decorated tables and chairs and producing a gorgeous buffet of cheeses, crackers, pates, savouries and delicious homemade cakes.

A Little Reminder How many of us are guilty?

Could I suggest – in all seriousness – that you go through your handbags and remove such things as last year’s syllabus, with all the names and details of your friends in Inner Wheel! And what about your diary – how much information is in there?

Your Club syllabus will probably look entirely different from previous years as now there will be much less information. You probably think this is going a bit too far – but look at it like this. How many of you have lost your handbags at some point? Think of the treasure trove of information that it probably contains! How about checking something in your club syllabus and, by accident, dropping it on the floor of the bus! Taking it out in the hairdresser’s to look something up! Yes, we can all make a very easy mistake like that. One person in the club does need information for the efficient running of the club but we do not ALL need to be carrying this around.

Look at it this way – the less you know, the less you can pass on unwittingly – because someone nowadays will be looking over your shoulder.

Unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worse and despite us tolerating the light showers, under parasols and umbrellas, it heaved it down and we all had to take refuge in the conservatory. This didn’t deter our entertainer, who was quite happy ‘singing in the rain’. As you know, a bit of inclement weather doesn’t faze the ladies of Inner Wheel and we had a good afternoon sharing fun, friendship and food. We hope to provide 200 mosquito nets for REMIT.

Inner Wheel, Literacy Boxes and Education

The many teachers and ex-teachers in Inner Wheel, to whom we have spoken over the years, know that in the poorer countries it is only Education that can offer children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a better future. 264 million children and adolescents worldwide do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school. In Zambia alone, over 1.2 million orphans and many more childrens’ futures are thwarted by extreme poverty.

UNICEF has a belief that every child has the right to an education, regardless of who they are, where they live or how much money their family has – and so do we. For an education, children need the basic school materials, such as those we send in Literacy Boxes. They also need them regularly, over many years, as education is an ongoing process.

In July, the Inner Wheel Club of Roborough helped with the packing of 24 Literacy Boxes bound for eight schools in and around Lusaka, Zambia to which we regularly send. The teachers in these schools will distribute the school materials to the orphans and the poorest children, pupils who desperately need the ongoing support for their education. Whilst the numbers of Literacy Boxes we send are a drop in the ocean, they are vital, as without them, many children would not now be in school, with hope of a better future.

This involvement with our local Inner Wheel Club, Roborough, continues the brilliant support we have had from Inner Wheel Clubs and Districts over the last twelve years, financial support that has enabled the poorest children and orphans to have an education that would otherwise be unavailable to them. We hope this Inner Wheel support can continue and grow, to give those we are helping a greater chance of completing their education and ultimately putting back into their communities.
