Leicester Assembly 2019

Once again Inner Wheel ladies descended on Leicester for fellowship and hard work. This year the Assembly was shortened to two days which allowed some of the ladies to leave on Wednesday lunchtime. Members of Council, however, had their meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Incoming Association President, Enid Law, received the chain of office from outgoing President Ann Acaster, the Association Executive was introduced and bars were presented to Members of Council. In her address, Enid shared her hopes for Inner Wheel in the coming year.

Peer Group sessions for the relevant groups occupied much of Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning. One District Editor put over her message loud and clear! She certainly meant us all to take notice!

There was a full and moving presentation by Riding for the Disabled which is President Enid’s chosen charity. Video clips helped show the benefits to the riders and also to those who volunteer.

President Enid presided over the first Council meeting of the year making those who were new to the role feel that their contributions were valuable. The Assembly once again renewed existing friendships and made new ones.

Working Together to Prevent Malaria

• Malaria is on the increase. • 219 million people have malaria • 435,000 deaths annually • Children under 5 and pregnant women more at risk

The Butterfly Tree and Medical Aid Films will be working together with Inner Wheel this year to help prevent malaria. The focus is to raise funds and awareness for malaria prevention. It is important to reduce the number of cases of malaria and provide adequate protection for those at risk.

The Butterfly Tree is a UK charity which works in Zambia raising awareness of malaria and providing practical but innovative help. Mosquito nets are distributed and there is also an insecticide paint which, when used on walls, kills the mosquito. Another interesting development is the use of larvacide granules which, placed in stagnant water, will kill the eggs. Education is also an important part of their strategy with workshops emphasising the importance of being tested and community health workers helping prevent further complications as a result of contracting malaria.

Medical Aid Films produce simple, easy to understand films which work as a really effective learning tool for people. The films provide clear explanations and go into considerable detail. In Zimbabwe, three Medical Aid Films dealing with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of malaria are being made available for people to share for free, courtesy of Econet Wireless, on their mobile phones, thus helping to save lives. The films are produced in a number of languages.

The Origin of the Flame of Friendship

Have you ever wondered why we so often find our Association President or our District Chairman lighting the Candle of Friendship? Nowadays, there may well be a little stretch of the imagination as the power switch of the battery-operated replica is switched on! Here we can learn a little more as a result of some background research by our Association Historian, Katharine Dobson. She has written

the following -

It is reckoned that a child dies of malaria every two minutes and that half of the world’s population could be at risk from malaria. Together with these two charities, Inner Wheel could help to make a significant difference to life for so many people.

The Flame of Friendship has become a special symbol at the opening and closing of all Inner Wheel meetings across Australia.

In October 1979, at the Australian National Association Conference held in Kiama, New South Wales, the Association President, Von Bellizia, introduced the Flame of Friendship into Australia. She presented every District Chairman with a beautiful long blue candle to take back to their Districts.

Von explained that the flame symbolised the warm feeling of pride we all feel in being members of Inner Wheel. The rays of the candle typify the friendship and understanding that will always exude from our Clubs.

The first Club to adopt this Flame of Friendship was the Inner Wheel Club of Bendigo South at their First General Meeting on 5 February 1980. Members agreed unanimously that the ‘Flame of Friendship’ would become their very own Club symbol and, on that day in February, the Flame of Friendship was born.

The origin of this is worth remembering when you next see a Candle of Friendship being lit.
