Early Memories for One Member

At Marlow Rotary Club’s Annual Dinner Dance, Inner Wheel President Jackie Duxbury presented Rotary President David Rogers with a 70th Jewel for their collar. They were happy to be photographed as she handed the Jewel over. She told the assembled party how she had attended her first President’s Night in Scarborough when her Mother was President of Inner Wheel. She would be about 10 years old then and never thought she would be President of an Inner Wheel club herself and making a presentation to Rotary. She was proudly wearing her Mother’s Inner Wheel Badge.

Joan Clerehugh A Head for Heights!

Have you a head for heights? If so, you might just have been “up for” the challenge of abseiling down the side of Ripon Cathedral, a drop of over a hundred feet.

A very brave lady from the Inner Wheel Club of Ripon, Diane Adkin, took up the challenge as she abseiled down Ripon Cathedral in May. She looks as though she thoroughly enjoyed herself, but she did not dare look down! The views of the town and surrounding countryside must, however, have been spectacular. She raised money for the Cathedral and also for Ripon Community Hospital. She looks really happy to be safely on the ground. This experience was possibly better enjoyed in retrospect once it was completed!

Wellingtons for Africa

As a teenager in the 50’s, I spent many school holidays working in the fields, in mud, dust and nettles, trying to earn some holiday money. So, as a first time International Service Organiser needing a charity to support, when I heard of the Jacob’s Well appeal for ladies’ wellingtons, I was interested. The appeal was one I could empathize with.

The wellingtons are for women who work on agricultural projects in parts of Africa. Unlike my experiences, they must contend with snakes and scorpions around their feet as they work barefooted.

As highlighted in the national press recently, snake bites can cause terrible injuries and are often fatal.

With club support we have had a year of “welly mania” – writing and singing a song about wellies, making welly shaped gift tags for Christmas and paddling in our wellies. During the year we have raised enough money to buy and

The Cake Lady Membership now

open to people with personal, family and other links to Rotary.

The ladies of the Inner Wheel Club of Solihull had a very informative talk by Kath Ryan, affectionately known as The Cake Lady. For those who were not able to join us, you missed a treat! A warm-hearted dynamic woman, she initially intended to take cakes, as a one-off gesture in 2009, to the wounded soldiers who had been posted to our Selly Oak Hospital. They were sent there during the Afghan war from 2009 and that continued till 2015, although by then treatment happened at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital. She received such a warm and affectionate response from the men that she returned weekly, taking their favourite cakes and cheering up the wounded and the multiple amputees - from the ages of 18. In total she said 9500 soldiers have passed through the QE. She was invited by the injured soldiers themselves to bring them cake after sampling some she left with her sister who was a patient at Selly Oak Hospital too. When she had used up all her savings, she started giving talks as a way of raising funds for her registered Charity - Cakes 4 Casualties - as she would make around 250 portions at a time. For those with wired jaws, she made mousse. Nothing is frozen, all baked fresh, some the day before and most on the day. She continues to bake each week for the wounded soldiers who find themselves in our Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

INTERCONTINENTAL TOURS

● Fly/hire tours held every few years;

● Destinations like South Africa, New Zealand, North America.

She has also visited Headley Court and now Stanford Hall, where they recuperate, every month. She has been invited to a number of the Invictus games and has been at a small tea table with both Prince William and Prince Charles. Prince Harry invited her to join some of his Invictus soldiers in the forecourt at Windsor, in the front row, for his wedding to Meghan Markle. Kath's Union Jack dress is her statement and attending a military memorial she was asked to wear it then and was approached by many who had received hugs and cakes from her during their period in hospital.

send 38 pairs of wellingtons. I watched them being loaded onto a container bound for Kings Village in Ghana, where Jacob’s Well is involved in an agricultural project.

We feel very happy that our efforts have been worthwhile and the women’s working conditions will, hopefully, be safer and more tolerable as a result.

Audrey Manton Inner Wheel Club of Lincoln Recruitment Drive

Earlier this year, the Vice President of The Deepings (D7) decided to have a Recruitment Drive at our local supermarket. The event ran from 8 am – 5 pm.

Six members of the club did two-hour shifts throughout the day. The event turned out to be quite successful and there might be three ladies who are interested enough to join us and see what our meetings are and what we do.

The response from the public was varied; we all have stories to tell. Some shoppers pointedly ignored us with very stony faces - in fact one lady on a mobility scooter stared, then whizzed past so quickly that she nearly ran one club volunteer over! Most were pleasant, however, and quite a few came to look at the display to see what we represented.

The day was never intended to be a fundraiser, but we did collect numerous donations which were given to Save the Children. Anything that helps promote Inner Wheel to the general public has to be worth a little effort!
