Llangollen, the home of President Enid, is a small town and community on the banks of the River Dee in North Wales, taking its name from Saint Collen, a 6th century monk who founded a church beside the river and is said to have arrived by coracle! In the Vale of Llangollen there stand the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey, which was established in 1201 under the patronage of Madog ap Gruffydd Maelor, a Prince of Powys, whose stronghold was Castell Dinas Brân the remains of which still stand, overlooking the town and the 16th century Bishop Trevor bridge. Llangollen has always been a popular place to visit, particularly since Thomas Telford constructed the A5 trunk road, which was, in the 19th and early 20th Centuries, the main thoroughfare from London to Holyhead and thence to Ireland. The beauty of the valley has delighted many distinguished visitors, among them Robert Browning, William Wordsworth and the Duke of Wellington. On the upper fringes of the town is found Plas Newydd, a small manor house which was the home of two eccentric Irish ladies who fled to Llangollen to avoid marriages for which neither of them wished. They acquired a great deal of renown, being known as “The Ladies of Llangollen”.

President Enid’s Letter Dear Inner Wheel Members,

A Very Happy New Inner Wheel Year to you all.

I am honoured to have been elected your Association President for 2019 – 2020 and I promise to do all I can to fulfil the faith placed in me.

Our Association has a well-defined structure starting with Clubs, through to Districts and ending with the Governing Body. The success of this structure relies heavily on the dedication and enthusiasm of the many volunteers who take up office and who are prepared to sit on committees. I thank all of them who give so willingly of their time and effort.

As members we work hard mainly through fund-raising for good causes but we do this in a spirit of friendship by working together – combining Friendship and Service. I wish you well in all your work for good causes throughout the year. I have chosen Riding for the Disabled as the

Association Charity for 2019 – 2020. There are RDA Centres in all our 29 Districts and you can either support your local centre or contribute to the Charity nationally.

Finally, we are delighted that the International Inner Wheel President for 2019 – 2020 is to be Phyllis Charter of the Inner Wheel Club of Newent in District 10. I look forward to welcoming Phyllis, together with many of our members, to the Conference and AGM in Belfast on April 27th – 29th. Phyllis’ theme, ‘Together We Can’ is a very positive message and I am sure we can and we will make this year a happy and successful one.

I look forward to meeting many of you at the 29 Rallies I shall be visiting this year; meanwhile enjoy!

Yours in True Inner Wheel Friendship, Enid Enid’s Family

Today, 29 ladies of Llangollen are members of the Inner Wheel Club, which received its Charter in 1964. It has always been an exceptionally warm and friendly club, working in close conjunction with the Rotary Club, founded in 1961. It was in the late 1980s that Enid’s husband, Mike, joined the Rotary Club of Llangollen and Enid immediately seized the opportunity to join the Inner Wheel Club, in which she very quickly became a key member. She has been President four times, always with innovative plans for Club events and activities and throughout the years, her enthusiasm for Inner Wheel and all it stands for has been an integral part of her life. She will undoubtedly transfer this committed and keen spirit to us all during her year as Association President.

Her professional life as a teacher of Welsh has meant that Enid was very well placed to become involved in activities to help children and young people, although this has been only a part of her many areas of involvement. She is a member of the Music and Staging Committee of the International Eisteddfod and has been an active participant in the local amateur dramatic society. Between times she is an inveterate and experienced shopper, always spotting the appropriate and interesting purchases.

Enid feels fortunate to have been elected as Association President; those who know her feel that the Association is also fortunate to have her as President, a post to which she will bring initiative, vigour and good humour.

Felly, pob dymuniad gorau i ti Enid yn dy flwyddyn arbennig! So, all best wishes to you Enid in your special year!

With my Theme of “Together we can” – I want you to join with me and show the world that, by being an Inner Wheel Member, together we can achieve our dreams and help others to achieve theirs, whilst enjoying friendships in our Clubs and with 110,000 other Members across the globe.

Let us be proud of our heritage and what our founder Margarette Golding achieved for Inner Wheel in the early days. Nearly 100 years later, we have to continue to inspire other women to join Inner Wheel by being Innovative in our efforts in this ever-changing world. Let us prove that whatever the size of your Inner Wheel Club, or wherever you are in the world, together we can support each other in our projects, both in our own communities and internationally. Let us prove that 110,000 Inspirational and Innovative women in Inner Wheel together can achieve so much.

St Francis of Assisi once said, “Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible”. On behalf of all those that you probably have never seen, but have assisted by doing the impossible over the years, may I say a very big thank you to you all.

Let us reinforce how small the world is and how successful International Inner Wheel is in holding hands around the world whilst leaving footprints for others to follow.

Alone we achieve so little - but in Inner Wheel – Together we can achieve so much.

International Inner Wheel 110,000 Inspirational Innovative Women

This is a particularly special year for us in GB and I as Phyllis Charter is a member of Newent and District (D10)
