CLAIRE IN THE COUNT Y BACK TO SCHOOL

LIVE 24-SEVEN

AND BACK TO NORMALITY. . . WHATEVER THAT IS?

BACK TO SCHOOL

62 Claire Thayers

Who can get used to the sound of the alarm clock? When the ringing in your ears has stopped, you drag yourself out of bed to start the day and when there’re children in the house that can mean chaos!

“Brush your teeth!”

“Where’s your PE kit?” “What do you mean it’s still at school…and dirty?” “PLEASE eat your breakfast…NOW!”

“Where’re my shoes?” “Time to go…”

“I am leaving in ONE minute!!”

…and so, the play the unfolds; always juggling, always chasing everyone along whilst thinking about what’s for supper, have you booked the dog in for his vaccinations, have you enough loo roll to last the week?

Always thinking about everyone else? Well this is a friendly reminder to think about yourself!

When I was super stressed at work, super stressed with an impending divorce, I was dashing to take my eldest to her first day at primary school. My mind was full of work stuff and particularly a difficult meeting I had that day, and I literally turned into the school, which was fine apart from the fact I didn’t see a car on the opposite side of the road! Crash! Most embarrassingly the Head at the new school saw it all. I’d written off a Volvo, which

apparently takes some doing, my daughter was crying in her car seat and I was scratting around for a pen and paper whilst offering profuse apologies.

Life can be so very stressful and when you’re starting back after (I hope) a blissful few weeks of holiday, it can seem doubly stressful!

A friend said to me after this whole episode, “Claire, what is the most important thing in your life?” I replied, “My children – obviously!” Her response knocked me for six…

“No Claire – it’s YOU!”

She was right. If I’m out of action or, heavens above, worse, who would look after everyone?!

Like many parents, I always put myself at the bottom of the pile. I was there to keep the house running, the hubby happy, the kids fed and watered, the dog walked, the rabbit fed…not once did I think of myself. Like many, I felt guilty if I took time out to have a massage, or go to an exercise class or, god forbid, sit with a book!

So a word of warning, remember to take good care of yourself too, even if it’s a case of setting the alarm clock a little earlier so you can have 10 minutes to yourself before the chaos of the day begins. Once the chores are done and all is quiet in the house, take that long relaxing bath with a G&T and a book before bed!

As you’re reading this, you’re probably already back into the swing of things; with the holiday season being over, the school run and daily grind is the norm…again.
