Public urged to report illegal hare coursing
THE seasonal rise in illegal hare coursing has led an influential landowners’ body to issue advice to the public. Coursing is the use of dogs to
chase, catch and kill hares, with il- legal gambling on the outcome the main attraction. Thepractice is traditionally asso-
ciated with the post-harvest sum- mer period when fields are left stubbled after cutting. Those behind the practice are
hardened criminals who damage property, use intimidation and vi- olence and cause suffering to the dogs and the hares. The Country Land & Business
Association (CLA) is encouraging peoplewho see hare coursing tak- ing place to followthese three tips: Do not approach hare coursers; Report any suspicious activity to the police on 101; Call 999 if you suspect a crime is actually taking place.
CLA (South East) represents
thousands of landowners, farmers and rural businesses in Kent and across the south east. ActingregionaldirectorTimBam-
fordsaid:“Weappreciate thatpolice have a range of pressures but we want to ensure that tackling hare coursing remains apriority. “Those involved are hardened
criminals – often using threats, in- timidation and in some cases vio- lenceagainstanyonewhochallenges
their actions. These criminals don’t think twice about trespassing, dam- aging crops and property, and give little or no consideration to animal welfare.” Whenphoning thepolice, callers
should be prepared to give an ac- curate description. Hare coursing was banned in
2004. Brown hare populations have declined by about 80% in the past century, largely down to changing farmingmethods.
