Bungay High School News BUNGAY High School
held its Summer Concert in the beautiful setting of St Mary’s Church for the fifth consecutive year on Wednesday 17th July and once again showcased a wealth of musical talent amongst its students. During the first half the audience were treated to a varied programme ranging from pop and rock to musicals and classical pieces. The opening item, Bach’s Prelude No. 1, was performed by science teacher Mr Kevin Mannion, who is retiring after thirty- eight years teaching at Bungay High School. The school instrumental ensemble played two pieces led by Mr Martin Kershaw. Other highlights included assured instrumental solos
from Matthew Rolph (tuba) and Chloe Drew-Batty (violin) and an expressive performance by A level Music student Caitlin Crabb who performed her own piano composition. Year 9 and 10 GCSE Music students contributed a number of pieces, with strong vocal performances from Charlotte Youngman, Charlie Wilks and Florence McMorran. Year 10 band ‘Neon’ finished the first half in energetic style with a four-song set including two of their own original songs. After the interval, the audience were treated to polished solo vocal performances by Isabella Taylor, Lewis Pepperell, and Jet-Leoni Lewis as well as two songs from a Year 9 band.
Year 7 student Alex Booty gave a poised and sensitive performance of Chopin’s Etude in C# minor and Year 12 student Hannah Pywell demonstrated her huge vocal talent with her rendition of Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’. To bring the evening to a close, staff members joined students as the choir, ‘Singing Hands’ signing choir and ensemble energetically performed three songs including ‘We Are The Champions’ and ‘Mr Blue Sky’. The signing choir was led by Christine Lall and the choir and ensemble directed by Head of Music Fran Drew-Batty. It was the culmination of a great evening of music.
SPEXHALL AND WISSETT WI
WE have been lucky enough to have a variety of speakers over the last few months. Helen Reeve, was a very enthusiastic lady, who explained how her love of cows, particularly Dexter cattle, had led her life into many different and interesting directions. In May Sharon Lockhart,

OUR meeting in June was a tea-party which everyone enjoyed. Poems were read and a quiz was given out. On Wednesday 17th July
Pat and Philip Alker came to give us a talk about Ethiopia, with both dressed in the local traditional costume of the country. They go over there every 18 months to take money for food for the children with HIV, they also fund a library with the books in English so they can communicate with the outside world. They talked of their travels through the country, about the customs and beliefs. Ethiopia is a mainly
Christian country but the men and women worship in separate churches. We were all left feeling
very fortunate for the way our lives are and things we take
for granted. A very interesting talk and quite an eye-opener.
from FCC, the Spanish company who administer waste management for Suffolk, explained how it worked, and emphasised how important recycling and reusing our waste is. An inspiring speaker, who pointed out that making small changes to what we use every day will make a difference. Tina Oldfield, our speaker in July, explained how she embarked on a trek to Everest Base Camp in memory of her
daughter who had sadly died of Breast Cancer, leaving behind two young daughters. It was truly a feat of endurance, very basic food rations, even more basic- indeed non existent bathing facilities, not to mention wobbly bridges over ravines, evading yaks on these bridges, and the unseasonal snow, what an experience, not one which we feel like following. Some of our members
have also enjoyed a boat trip from Norwich, visited Henstead Exotic Gardens, a truly unique award winning garden, and a trip to Wimpole Hall. In September Andrew Brogan is coming along to tell us about his life in London, before he established the gardens at Henstead, a very engaging and amusing speaker, so
