Aldeburgh Carnival 2019
ALDEBURGH is fortunate in being one of the towns that has managed to continue the carnival tradition when so many others have been forced to give up.
Aldeburgh Carnival, as it is more generally referred to nowadays, is thought to be at least 170 years old. It has had various titles over the years but was known as Ye Olde Marine Regatta as long ago as 1835.
The earliest and a programme
found was for 1892 when 15 events were held – 12 sailing races, two swimming races
greasy pole
competition. One of the big attractions of the day was a race for the East Coast Lifeboats from Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Dunwich.
This year’s carnival sees lots of great fun and games for all the family. Here is a brief breakdown of events across the weekend:
Saturday 17th August: Music Day. Various acts performing
across different
venues in Aldeburgh’s town centre. A popular recent addition to Aldeburgh Carnival’s programme. Silent auction - Opens before Carnival and runs through
until Sunday afternoon on Moot Green. Is it water or wine? - The adult game of chance, where you may win a bottle of wine (or more than one). Petanque competition - Opens before Carnival and runs through until Sunday afternoon on Moot Green. Children’s face painting and lollipop hunt.
Sunday 18th August: Sports
Day. 10k mini marathon - Our famous 10k Mini Marathon, through the beautiful Suffolk countryside. Children’s races - All your favourites – egg and spoon race, sack race and more. The egg boat race - challenge
for inventors,
to carry an unbroken, raw chicken egg across the Model Yacht Pond. Punch & Judy - Two chances to enjoy this classic event.
Monday 19th August: Carnival
Day. Carnival
Procession - 3.15pm from the Moot Hall, and down the High Street. RNLI and HM Coastguard Air-Sea Rescue Demonstration,

- 8.45pm from the High Street. Spectacular firework display - 9.15pm, set off from the
seafront opposite The
White Lion Hotel. Suffolk School of Samba, Pop, Chorus & Military
Band,
performances in the high street - Spectacular music to get you dancing. Crowning of the Carnival Queen - The Carnival Queen is crowned at the beautiful Moot Hall. Swimming races in the sea - A long-standing tradition – join other swimmers in a sea race.
Also happening over the
weekend: Lucky duck races, the Carnival draw, donkey rides on the beach, spot the
window, arts, crafts, gifts, food, drink and other trade stalls
