Aldeburgh Carnival 2019

ALDEBURGH is fortunate in being one of the towns that has managed to continue the carnival tradition when so many others have been forced to give up.

Aldeburgh Carnival, as it is more generally referred to nowadays, is thought to be at least 170 years old. It has had various titles over the years but was known as Ye Olde Marine Regatta as long ago as 1835.

The earliest and a programme

found was for 1892 when 15 events were held – 12 sailing races, two swimming races

greasy pole

competition. One of the big attractions of the day was a race for the East Coast Lifeboats from Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Dunwich.

This year’s carnival sees lots of great fun and games for all the family. Here is a brief breakdown of events across the weekend:

across different

venues in Aldeburgh’s town centre. A popular recent addition to Aldeburgh Carnival’s programme. Silent auction - Opens before Carnival and runs through

until Sunday afternoon on Moot Green. Is it water or wine? - The adult game of chance, where you may win a bottle of wine (or more than one). Petanque competition - Opens before Carnival and runs through until Sunday afternoon on Moot Green. Children’s face painting and lollipop hunt.

Sunday 18th August: Sports

Day. 10k mini marathon - Our famous 10k Mini Marathon, through the beautiful Suffolk countryside. Children’s races - All your favourites – egg and spoon race, sack race and more. The egg boat race - challenge

for inventors,
