Leiston Good Neighbour Scheme


THE Leiston Good Neighbour Scheme (LGNS) provides free voluntary help to people who are socially isolated in Leiston, Sizewell or Knodishall. For example volunteers can visit someone for a chat, help to fill in a form, support and/or accom- pany them to go to an activity, do a minor repair, collect a prescrip- tion, walk their dog, or carry out a small amount of shopping for them. They can visit regularly, just once, or as needed, depend- ing on what someone would like. Volunteers can also do a one-off garden tidy for someone who is no longer able to man- age this themselves. We do not, however, provide transport (for example to take someone to hospital) because this service is carried out by CATS.


We currently have 19 volunteers who have different skills to of- fer, and have carried out more than 30 activities with people in the last three months. We would love to hear from you if you are interested in volunteering with us. You can choose what you would like to do, and how often – for example, some people like befriending, and others prefer to give practical help.

appreciated and has already made such a difference.” We held our first Annual Gen- eral Meeting on May 23rd at the Council Offices in Leiston. The Management Committee reported on our growth, ac- tivities, publicity, and financial status, and formalised plans for the coming year. Several of our volunteers attended.


We also played a big role in the Suffolk Day event held at the Library, on June 23rd. We are continuing to promote LGNS as widely as possible, placing our cards and A4 post- ers in local shops, business and public places, and attending lo- cal events with the public and voluntary sectors.
