News & Events COMPETITIVE TRAIL NEWS IN THE SOUTHWEST

NATRC AND TTCC EVENTS SPORT NEW TRAILS

The North American Trail Ride Conference

Wayfarer, scheduled for September 14-15 and the Texas Trail Challenge Pony Pilots on September 7, at the Parrie Haynes Ranch West Side in Killeen, Texas, will feature nearly all new trails this year. According to Ranch Manager and host Kate

Love Hollar, recent cedar abatement work on the ranch has offered opportunities to include parts of the ranch never before ridden during events. "We have been working this past 8 months on

clearing and marking new loops for all of our com- petitive trail events at the ranch," said Hollar. "With the spring rains, we are also hopeful we will have water in all of the creeks like we do right now." Both the TTC and NATRC events are competi-

tive trail rides, but with slightly differing formats. The TTC competition is 8-10 miles long with 10 judged observations and no time restrictions. The NATRC competition offers distances of 10, 18 and 28 miles per day, with 3-5 judged observations and time constraints. Both offer different divisions de- pending on the skill level of the horse and rider team. Overnight camping options at Parrie Haynes in-

clude electric hook-ups, cabins, a bunkhouse and primitive camping. There is also a pool available for use when not on the trail. For more information on either events, visit the

organizations' FaceBook pages or websites or contact Elaine Swiss on swissranch@earthlink.net. w

2020 COMPETITIVE TRAIL PLANNING UNDERWAY Ride managers for NATRC, American En-

durance Ride Conference (AERC) and Texas Trail Challenges are lining up their dates and venues for the 2020 competition year which begins December 1. The 2019 season ends at different times in Novem- ber, depending on the organization. "Planning early is essential to try and coordinate

the many events that take place during year," said Elaine Swiss, NATRC Region 4 ride coordinator, "Especially when the organizations share many of the same facilities and trail systems. Marking the trails once makes it much easier on ride management and is more cost effective. We also work to be sure rid- ers can attend as many events as possible throughout the year by not overlapping."

Ride Schedules are

published on the organ- izations' websites and on the groups' Face- Book pages where ad- ditional information on the formats and re- quirements may also be found. Horses of all ages and skill back- grounds can be suc- cessful in trail events, as can their riders. w
