NEW BARBECUE SURVEY Check Out What Customers Actually Want!


CINDERS BARBECUES are probably the best-known name in LPgas catering barbecues with 35 years production in the UK. Their robust export record is enough to cheer any faction of the Brexit divide, and in April this year they reviewed their home market and commissioned a survey to reveal some surprising facts.


In time-honoured fashion, here are the results in ascending order of importance:


• Only 14% overall preferred a basic burger, rising to 25% in London. This surprising reversal of what we expected is topped by 23% complaining about being served a burger in a cold bun! The obvious solution seems to be Gourmet burgers in warm or toasted buns. What a great tip, and ‘Cinders’ say their barbecues give a quick and even toast to any bread product.


• ‘Hygiene’ came relatively low on the list, with concerns over barbecues left out all summer and over control of flies. ‘Cinders’ barbecues self-clean internally and are amongst a range of barbecues which fold away when not in use. Covered bins, covers over food prior to cooking and over side dishes prepped for serving are essential, as is a scrupulous display of attention to hygiene.

• Not surprisingly, people hated queueing and attention to this fact may decide if customers come to your next barbecue. Consider table service, think about how you might provide entertainment for the queue, or maybe have a ’burgers and banger only’ queue to relieve congestion. Another great tip which really works is to move the relish table well away from the point of service.


• ‘Ambience’ came next to the top with a quarter of the 1000 interviewees across twelve regions saying that live music made a ‘huge difference’ to their enjoyment when eating outside, with women declaring the highest preference. Live music was most important in the North West, North East and South West with Wales being least bothered at 13%. Music, whether live or piped, appears to be an essential component to a barbecue event in the majority of the UK.


• Top of the list! A whopping 47% thought Hotels and Pubs needed to up their game when it comes to barbecues, rising to 56% of


Londoners surveyed. Alongside this was the feeling that not enough thought was given to side dishes, with 49% of women wanting more variety. These figures appear to indicate that customers expect an outdoor dining experience wherever possible, which could translate into profit.


This may be the first practical survey of what customers want from a barbecue event, with extracts shared by permission of Cinders Barbecues Ltd. There are implications to al fresco dining in general, and pointers for decision-makers who may be considering extending the footprint of food service.
