STAFF and members of the FUW will be stepping out to support the president’s charities Farming Community Network and the Alzheimer’s Society in an attempt to walk a total of 8 7 0 miles ‐ the circumference ofWales! The aim is to encourage even more participants in this year’s walk as we come
together to meet the challenge. The day will be a fun occasion ‐ it’s not a competition and no‐one will be left behind. Three different ability groups will set off from Tan‐y‐Bwlch beach, Aberystwyth
on June 2 1 , walking south along the coast path, with the aim of completing the combined distance. Organiser and policy officer Charlotte Priddy said: “We’re hoping for a great
response from both FUW staff and members alike with a choice of walks for serious hikers and gentle ramblers. At the end of the day we will head back to FUWheadquarters in Gogerddan, Penrhyncoch, for a beer and a BBQ to celebrate our combined achievements.” Choose your route: • 4 0 miles ‐ Ynyslas to Aberystwyth night before, then join with 2 5 mile group • 2 5 miles ‐ Aberystwyth to Llanrhystud and back • 1 0 miles ‐ Aberystwyth to Blaenplwyf and back More information: Charlotte Priddy ‐

LAST YEAR’S CHARITY EVENT: To climb Snowdon three times in one day.
Reminder abou t Gwaredu BVD deadline
THE FUWis reminding cattle keepers to get involved in the national Gwaredu BVD scheme before the RDP funding comes to an end in 2020. Gwaredu BVD is a 10 million pound RDP funded project which aims to eradicate BVD from the national herd by providing information about the BVD status of the herd and by identifying Persistently Infected (PI) animals. Around 7,000 farms have now participated in this programme and the project is set to end in 2020. BVD is known to cause immunosuppression and reproductive failure. BVD may present as an increase in the number of calves with pneumonia or scours and a reduction in conception rates. Around 30 per cent of farms may have BVD present. Testing for BVD under the Gwaredu BVD project will occur at the same time as the annual TB test. Testing involves the blood sampling of five young stock between nine and 18 months of age for BVD antibodies. If there are BVD antibodies present on the farm then finding and removing persistently infected animals is recommended. Persistently infected animals are infected in the womb and excrete virus for their entire lifetime. Estimates relating to the cost of BVD suggest that the cost to affected farms is about £45 per cow per year on a beef farm and around £15,000 per year in an average 132 cow dairy herd. Members wishing to find out more about Gwaredu BVD should contact their vet for further details. Further information can also be found on the official Gwaredu BVD website ‐
