Nutmeg “Nuggets” A Look into Integrative Cancer Support

physician specializing in integrative cancer care, I provide patients with evidence-based natural therapies that are safe and effective during vary- ing stages of treatment. There is a role for natu- ropathic care before and after surgery, to support patients receiving radiation or chemotherapy,

F

and during survivorship following cancer treatment. The naturopathic approach requires treating each patient as

an individual. The various therapies employed in integrative cancer care should refl ect the individual patient, the cancer that is being treated, and the conventional therapies they receive. Plans often include dietary change, nutritional supplements, botanical medicine and homeopathy.

Is there a difference between Integrative and Alternative cancer

care? An “alternative” regimen means that a patient has opted to focus on natural medicines and to decline conventional care such as chemotherapy or radiation. On the other hand, an “integrative ” approach combines both conventional care and natural therapies in an effort to benefi t from both approaches and improve outcomes. Integrative cancer care incorporates evidence-based natural therapies and often address areas that are missing in conventional treatments. Adding natural therapies to strengthen the immune system and to im- prove digestion of food and absorption of vitamins and minerals will improve the body’s ability to heal. Herbal medicine and nutritional supplementation can minimize side effects from chemotherapy, such as fatigue, stress and sleeplessness. Whether you are concerned about developing cancer, have been recently diagnosed, are undergoing treatment or are in survivorship, it is important that an individualized plan is developed.

Honor Every Year of Your Life

focused on our physical bodies than spiritual. Women, especially, must stop trying to live up to some unrealistic “beauty” standard, believing that feminine worth decreases with every pass- ing year. Let’s dissolve that misbelief that our worth is determined by our shape, complex-

ion or age. We may begin by referring to “gray” hair as “silvery”, already more wonderful!

By attempting to conceal our time on the planet, we invalidate our connection to our universe, deny our wisdom and dishonor our gender. Masking everything about our naturally evolving selves only creates a greater disconnect from our universe. We may look to indigenous peoples, who hold elders with great esteem, knowing that outward signs of aging indicate great wisdom within. Shamans know that humans are the only species to walk completely upright. Walking on the earth, we are taking in energy from the sky (mas- culine essence) through the tops of our heads and from the earth (feminine essence) through the soles of our feet. These energies connect at our hearts, our centers for love and compassion.

In ancient times, women danced to magnify this energy, barefoot on the earth, under a sunny, stormy or starry sky. Men drummed, connecting to the trees and animals with drums made of wood and animal hides. Let’s get our bare feet back on the earth, let’s dance, drum, and reconnect to the “ALL-That-Is”. Let’s honor every joyful year of our lives…silvery hair, wrinkles and all!
