German-owned forwarder Rhenus has acquired Miami-based Freight Logistics. Freight Logistics operates its own consolidation hub near the international airport and has its own offices in Argentina, Brazil and Chile. It follows acquisitions by the Rhenus Group in Brazil and Canada.


Deutsche Post DHL’s Disaster Response Team moved nearly 800 tonnes of aid to south-east Africa aſt er it was struck by cyclone Idai. The 12-strong team was deployed at Beira Airport between 24 March and 12 April at the request of the United Nations, handling incoming relief goods and coordinating aid for the United Nations and international relief organisations. Davies Turner sees slowdown ahead

Group, Philip Stephenson said: “One year ago European haulage capacity was very tight, especially in Germany, while now there is currently the capacity to handle demand, despite the well publicised driver


shortages. “We have also noted that


haulage prices in the fi rst quarter of 2019 were higher than in the fi rst quarter of 2018. That is not surprising, despite the situation regarding supply and demand,


as we are seeing a much- needed catch up in pricing, as underlying operational costs continue to increase strongly due to driver shortages pushing up employment costs. Road tolls and fuel prices are increasing.”


Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity for the Scottish Government, Michael Matheson is to deliver the keynote address at the Freight Transport Association’s Logistics Scotland conference in Falkirk on 30 May. The news comes as the minister confirmed a £5 billion package of investment for Scotland’s infrastructure in 2019-20 including new roads and railways. Full and part-load operator, Continental Cargo Carriers (CCC), recently acquired by Europa Worldwide, has bought 35 new trailers, bringing its total fleet to 270. All CCC trailers now carry trackers. CCC completed the relocation of its Ramsgate sales and operations team to Europa’s Dartford headquarters earlier this year.

Ceva group chief operating officer and deputy chief executive Nicolas Sartini was appointed chief executive at the forwarder’s annual general meeting on 29 April, following its takeover by Marseille-based shipping group CMA CGM. He will take up his new role on 1 June. He will replace Xavier Urbain who will become executive advisor to CMA CGM chairman and chief executive Rodolphe Saadé, who was elected CEVA chairman at the same meeting. Rolf Watter is CEVA vice-chairman. Ceva has also appointed Pierre-Olivier Landry as its new chief human resources, succeeding Pierre Girardin who is to pursue new opportunities outside the company.


Specialist container builder CakeBoxx Technologies is offering a new unit for steel and aluminium coil cargoes. The 20ft CoilBoxx container uses the same ‘deck and lid’ form factor as other CakeBoxx models but a specially designed floor in the CoilBoxx deck houses adjustable cradles.


DSV has opened a new logistics facility at Tuzla, near Istanbul. It consolidates all warehouse operations in the area and offers 45,000sq of open and closed warehousing including 2,000sq m offices.


Dachser Air & Sea Logistics has opened an office for air and sea freight in Gothenburg. It currently has eight employees at the new location with plans for 20 in the long run. The head of the new country organization for air and sea freight in Sweden is Anna Bergdahl.

The Unite trade union said on 16 May that it was considering strike action over failures to credit pension contributions of some XPO Logistics UK employees. Unite said it had “repeatedly tried to get iron-clad guarantees at the XPO annual meeting in New York” that this would not occur again, “but to no avail”. The union added that the problems are believed to have arisen since the company moved to a new payroll provider though it was not clear how many of its nearly 3,000 members in UK have been affected.
