Soaring demand from the world’s airlines

Building planes, or keeping them where they belong in the sky, calls for real logistics expertise. The aerospace industry is no place for amateurs.

Yusen Logistics can handle all aspects of aerospace logistics, including urgent aircraſt parts or

parts for refurbishment of

aircraſt . However, its main focus is on components for aircraſt manufacture. The forwarder’s main area of

growth has been with aircraſt manufacturers and tier one suppliers. Business development

manager for aerospace and automotive Richard Tyler says: “We’ve worked with our customers to ensure on time performance by improving the handling of the product and fi nal delivery to the end customer in both the UK and across Europe.

Alongside this, we’ve seen a

dramatic growth in the movement of aircraſt engines for airlines, as our expertise and capability in this area is being recognised by major aircraſt manufacturers.” The stakes are high in the

aerospace industry and every detail must be right. As might be expected, there’s a complex structure

of regulations,

legislations and checks to ensure that safety is always at the forefront of the operation. Products must be handled in a specifi c way with a strict paperwork trail from the start of manufacture to fi nal fi tting to the aircraſt . At all stages of the journey, parts must be kept in prime condition and checked

according to specifi c guidelines to comply with the high government and industry regulations. Tyler explains: “We always

need to be performing at the same high level of excellence

as our customers. To achieve

this, our staff have been trained to undertake the tasks required on behalf of our customers and in compliance with regulations. We’ve applied the knowledge and expertise that we’ve gained through working within the automotive vertical over the past 20 years to focus on a results driven, highly processed and just- in-time operation.” Aerospace is a key vertical for

Yusen and the forwarder is now looking to build on its successes to gain more customers in this sector. Tyler concludes: “In the UK

alone, there’s an estimated decade’s worth of work in the pipeline worth up to £195bn to the UK economy. So, it’s defi nitely a vertical that is continuing to present opportunities for the foreseeable future.”

DSV’s Aerospace & Defence vertical off ers an array of services to meet worldwide needs, including airlines, aircraſt engines, original equipment manufacturers (OEM), maintenance repair & overhaul (MRO), leasing organisation, defence and government services. Every solution is bespoke

and tailored to meet customers’ transportation needs. DSV says that it is totally focussed on “uncompromised service excellence, the removal of complexity and absolute clarity in all operations, at all levels.” The company adds: “The

Kuehne+Nagel has been one of the leading lights of aerospace logistics for more than 25 years, says senior vice president aerospace, Erik Goedhart. It has customers in all

sectors of the industry from vendors to leasing companies, including original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), airlines, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) firms and

services companies. Back in 2005, Kuehne+Nagel

launched its Supply the Sky concept, covering all aerospace solutions such as spare parts logistics, engine logistics, inflight catering supply chain, production logistics or aircraft on ground (AOG) support. Goedhart explains: “We

rapidly expanded to more than 80 dedicated aerospace

stations and over 3,000 of our total of 82,000 professionals deal only with our aerospace customers. We have become the leading aerospace innovation and digitization provider

for production

logistics, engine logistics and spares logistics.” Technical

licenses and

certificates are a fact of life in aerospace, and the logistics

part of the operation should be no exception, Kuehne+Nagel believes. Goedhart says: “We are convinced the logistics chapters in the key aerospace airworthiness regulation need an update. Therefore we took the lead in certifying our staff to make sure engines, parts and interiors are being dealt with in a way that respected the value of those assets.

on-going success of DSV has been due to understanding the fundamentals of professional service and creating distinct advantage over our competitors by carefully listening to our customers, providing them with quality services that consistently meet or exceed their needs.” DSV Global Transport and

UK Aerospace & Defence

product manager, Byron Watkins, comments: “DSV’s dedicated Aerospace & Defence team’s experience of project transportation has grown year on year as we overcome many challenges when moving vertical-specifi c cargo. Factors such as size, weight, specialised equipment and road closures are just some of the diffi culties that are necessary for us to fi nd solutions for when transporting from and to almost anywhere, worldwide 24 hours a day, and seven days a week.”
