Farmers picking up the cost offlytipping
FLYTIPPERS have been accused of costing farmers the earth by dumping harmful waste in the countryside. The latest figures releasedby the for Environment,
Department
Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) showcouncils received551 reports of rubbish beingdumpedon farm- land in the South East in 2017/18. Described as just the “tip of the
iceberg”, theDefra statistics, which log a national total of 79,307 cases, do not include themajority of inci- dents on private land. In Maidstone, 1,041 reports of
flytipping were received during 2017/18, andtherewere 507 inTon- bridge andMalling. When it comes to rubbish
dumped in the countryside, esti- mates show farmers are cleaning upafter others at an average cost of £1,000 per incident. They are also liable to prosecution and fines if the rubbish damages the land.
Insurance specialist Will
Kendrick, who advises farmers in the South East, said: “Flytipping is not only visually impactful and a nuisance – it can be a source of pollution. “The latestDefra figures showit
is not only everyday household waste that gets dumped – thou- sands of incidents involve asbestos, clinical waste and chemical and fuelwaste. So farmers are not only forking out on clean-up costs but
also have to worry about the dan- ger it poses to themselves, their workers, their animals and their land.” He added: “In our experience,
there is a reluctant acceptance by farmers that flytipping is part of everyday life, andthey quietlydeal with incidents. But for thoseunfor- tunate enough to have a flytipping ‘hotspot’ on their land, costs soon tot up and pose a threat to their business.”
